Just did a play through of HR the other day. The piss filter wasn't nearly as bad as I remember it being. It's pretty obvious that the studio entered a serious crunch time when they were developing the Picus offices / Montreal. The boss fights aren't bad (except against Hyron) but it's clear that effort should have been put elsewhere in the game. I really dig the dialogue conversations with certain NPCs, so it's a shame the game included a social enhancer mod. Also, Radar 2 "upgrade" is an absolute pitfall.

I think what makes the game "work" for me is that, for the most part, the dialogue and story makes sense. One criticism I've seen for HR is that it doesn't cover ALL of the conspiracies. Well... That would have been a terrible decision. HR just focuses on one PART of the global conspiracy, which is human augmentation. It could have gone further with the topic, especially by introducing a faction or characters who believe in an extreme form of human purity that includes the killing of the elderly, the physically disabled, and so on, but I suppose Eidos Montreal thought race relations was more relatable?

I give it a "not as bad as you remember it, but not as good as Dude Sex" / 10

It is said to have some bugs because the new content was bolted to an older build of the game. I recall a part on Jensen's building where a wall texture was visibly tiled incorrectly. And there's that section on a ship that was originally a DLC but is mandatory now; it really breaks the pacing of the game.

It's the Wii U version, so bugs they fixed on PC were reintroduced since it never got patched.
The Save Tracer Tong DLC was integrated into the main game and made mandatory, it's just not very interesting.
Missing Link DLC was integrated and made mandatory, which really fucks with the pacing, especially on NG+ where you have all the augments and suddenly have none.
The "fixed" boss fights just put an extra room into each arena with a computer you can hack to turn on turrets or robots to fight for you, as well as throwing more guns and ammo around.

It's not terrible but I'd say the only 100% positive addition was New Game Plus.

I have mixed feelings of it, at the time I played the game I was not favourable to it because of trends of that era in post processing. But now i realise that it's essential on directors cut because of how lighting casts in certain scenes. Without the gold/piss filter some scenes are outright broken in lighting because it was developed around these specific post processing effects. But then you have things like the LIMB clinics which didn't apply the filter at all in the original. So when you go for the restoration mod it looks wrong in these instances. So there's even a caveat about directors cut being wrong, even when modded.

Remember that The Creation of Adam is not a reference to God creating Adam, but rather to Adam's creation, God. Note how God is surrounded by a magenta cloak in the shape of the human brain, with each angel's face and figure creating the wrinkles and folds upon its surface.

We create gods in our own image and likeness. Famous people cultivate optics to remain favorable to the ones who worship them, and will change their image to be more acceptable to the disciples who crawl to their altar. AI can only machine-learn from what man has created.

Gaze upon the globalized world of God, and kneel before its divine wonders.

Because it absolutely kills the pacing of that point in the game to send you on a glorified side mission for 3-6 hours that's only tangentially related to the main story.

Also most game that do "take away your powers" section either have it in the early mid/ game or as optional content. The missing link happens near the end of the game where your character will be super upgraded and is such a sudden change of pace it's jarring

I've said it before and I'll say it again, open world is a meme. It worked for MMOs because Teamspeak/Skype/Discord didn't exist. Players were out in the open world actively interacting with each other, creating the illusion that the open world was more alive than it actually was. With the ability to communicate through voice, players have now retreated back to instanced content even within MMOs, rendering open worlds obsolete.

I had to get kentie's launcher because the brightness slider wouldn't work otherwise and it was so dark I couldn't see shit. The map fix for me is mostly to get music playing when you return to hell's kitchen. GOTY version is bugged and music doesn't play

HR is a good game. The writing feels more real and completely removed from the modern writing scourge we're going through at the moment. It doesn't treat it's players like idiots and gives a balanced view on cybernetics and augmentations, ultimately allowing the player to decide based on their own world view.

Unironically audience actually got filtered and are still malding about it because they can't admit they were wrong.

I remember one of the devs came on /v/ too when it happened and got feedback, which gave them some good will. They tried the same thing later for Mankind Divided and sidestepped a lot of the more critical questions, and that's when I knew the game was going to have problems.

MGS2 was more accurate, as AI will be used for nothing more than "curation" of information in and out, just like the old Mighty Wurlitzer. We see it right now as the internet is now entering full lockdown mode by the exact same people who owned all the physical press and legacy media

HR gives way more praxis kits than you'll ever need so the XP gimp doesn't matter. Couple that with most augs being based around non-lethal stealth gameplay means if you do a lethal playthrough you need even less of the already way too many praxis kits. Also, non-lethal takedowns being silent while lethal ones making noise is a bullshit thing that should never have existed. The game really, really wants the player to do non-lethal stealth playthrough so the fun is in spitting in the devs' face.

I didn't use takedowns much, I relied on a silenced pistol with laser sight for most of my run. Sniper Rifle and Turrets for everything else.

saying fuck you to the XP system is probably the only way to enjoy lethal HR. I suppose takedowns are pointless if you have a silenced pistol with tons of ammo. no downside to just headshotting people even at close range, is there? I played through the game at least three times but never completed my fourth run which was supposed to be lethal. I wanted to use lethal takedowns and the crossbow only to find that lethal takedowns suck due to the noise and the crossbow gets no ammo and can be broken by an upgrade as well? it's been too long but yeah, I was annoyed and quit.

as for praxis kits, sure you get more than you need by the late game. but getting more XP is obviously an advantage in the early to mid game.

Only when you start having armored guys as enemies, but then you just use AP ammo on them anyway.

do KO'd enemies take fall damage? could do a silent takedown, the drag the body to a high place and drop it to finish the job. Hitman style.

but this is the kind of shit I would maybe do as a teenager in video games. I'm too old to larp at this point.
