Alarak, at least, never jobs or is entirely incorrect about anything, nor does he directly oppose any protag despite being entirely self-serving. He's objectively built like an antagonist but is self-aware enough to realize that acting the antagonist can never work out positively for him. So he'll hitch his wagon to the good guys knowing that its the most practical option for both parties meaning he gets to fuck around with them (within reason) while he's there.
