The system is not nearly as obtuse as people make it out to be but people are extremely stupid and moreover don't try to actually learn anything, despite the game having an extremely thorough tutorial and info menu as well as many simpler strats you can use to get through it.
It is, or should be, one of the most iconic games ever made.

to be fair the in game tutorial leads you to believe that the monster type and element matter as much as the blunt/slash/pierce stats when they're really just a bonus you add on top of your weapons using gems and spell buffs

It needs QoL additions like the ability to hotswap weapons on the go ala MGS. I can put up with all the other weird jank but if you make it frustrating to interact with what's supposed to be a key component of your combat system then I'm going to have problems.
Speaking of which, a stealth fantasy game that plays like metal gear would be pretty cool.

I remember the final boss took me almost an hour to beat because I was doing 1 point of base damage per hit. The fight was so drawn out that the boss eventually ran out of MP and I had to wait like 30 seconds for him to recharge MP each time he used a spell.

Great game. Thought I understood the weapons system well enough, I used daggers because it had an attack rhythm that I was the most comfortable with. Big fucking mistake though, the final boss ended up being total aids because he was always just out of range from my dagger.

As amazing as VS is, it is very clunky to play and was so even at the time. For a game that is very heavy on player experimentation they did their best job to make that experimentation process as slow and painful as possible. It never had a chance with Matsuno handling the main design of the game.
