It is that in a way, but it's a bit more complex that this. It is not exclusive to Christianity, nor does it originate with it.
Sin is a concept of Fate, Destiny (these two can be exclusive), Astronomy, Astrology (if and when applicable), Truth and Causality.
It is a deviation from a true path, that may lead to stress, strain, ensnaring fugue, corruption, ruin or outright destruction of a thing from its core nature.
It applies to any item, person or object, anything and anyone bar eldritch exceptions.
Imagine a John. He has core values, material, immaterial, stated and abstract, intuitive, instinctual, that make him John. There are things John may say, things John may like, may hate. To make John do things that are antithetical to his true, innermost existence, or if he does them himself is a sin in relation to causal chain that makes John himself.
If religion of any kind is anthitetical to John, but not their actual principles or commandments, to make John a Christian is still a sin against him.
Not all humans are compatible with religion, not all religions are necessarily actual or [True], and this appears to be why humans are born without intrinsic religious knowledge. It is not unwelcome if it is just, but it is not mission critical.
If John is a Christian and acts in ways that turn him away, hurt him, in relation to his religion, that is a sin against him and God.
