I think the entire selling point of these things would be that you wouldn't have to assemble it yourself like a DIY PC, and just pick it up in a store somewhere. Literally just plug and play. The main difference between a hypothetical device like that would of course be that the Valve machine would still be an actual computer while your regular consoles would just be dumb boxes.

I could honestly see a device like that being extremely popular. To reach the masses, you need to dumb down your shit and make it as easy as possible. And although assembling a PC is easy for me, and someone who is willing to learn, many don't want to, but they still recognize the mountain of advantages a PC has over a regular console.

Imagine a hypothetical small(er) device where you can switch to a console UI and a regular computer desktop with like the push of a button. I think there's something there.

Yeah, no. If they sell this with regular margins, there is little reason to buy it. If they sell it at a subsidized price, more similar to consoles, then people who had no interest in Steam would just buy it as a cheaper computer, completely undermining the point of Steam even making these things. In other words, this will have some degree of console lockdown, or it will fail once again like the original Steam Machines.

Valve is coming at the right time with some good argument, people are sick of having to buy some games again when a new gen of console drop and have massive backlog. Also pc is pricing out lot of people.
They proved they are competent with the deck but some people just don't need mobile stuff.

If the price is right, it will be a bloodbath for the other console markers.

Only console they won't hurt is the Switch 2. Nintendo will dominate their own niche but it will be nice seeing the Steam Deck 2 finally get mainstream appeal. Plus, we need Sony's and Microsoft's influence on games to completely end.

The deck isn't niche, it's not marketed or readily available. There's a difference. The deck is for literally anyone who cares about video games and portability. It has completely different goals and expectations from a console, and so will the steam machine.
Imagine if the switch 2 was only sold exclusively on nintendo's website and they didn't market it anywhere. That's valve's hardware situation and that's something they're currently fine with and could change.

the difference was that Steam Machine meant fuck nothing. You could install steamos on a rapsberry pie and call it a steam machine.
Deck is a dedicated device and you can check in advance what games are going to work on it and thanks to its low resolution it somehow manages to still run some newer games.
And lastly the price at a time when hardware prices rose and Deck was still relatively cheap and the mobile gimmick as a bonus

The reason I own a console is for the convenience of physical discs and I donโ€™t want to deal with the bloated file sizes of modern games, where everything is 80+ GB at minimum. PS4 games were always about 30% smaller than their PC counterparts, but after the move to PS5, everything is 100+ GB now. Physical discs will likely die within the next generation, so there wonโ€™t be any advantage to owning a console anymore. A PC is all youโ€™ll ever need now. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a retard

I mean it makes sense.
I think the Steam Deck immediately showed that there is a market for prebuilt-PCs with good support for controllers and an open OS that is moddable, to which I'm sure that Decky would already be supported (but renamed/edited into something else slightly). This would basically be the "I want to play my Steam games away from my desk, but I do not need the portable aspect of the Deck" role that consoles typically filled (without Steam support), but now you've got your Steam library. Probably the best time to get in on the console market, especially if you are Gabe Newell and have fuck you money from CS2 gambling.
Now whether or not they will have Windows versions and SteamOS versions is to be determined but I hope they don't railroad people into Windows, switching to Linux based distros for gaming has quite literally been the best change I have made for playing video games in the past few years and I am trying my best to not go back. I have a partition for Windows on my main PC that I use for CS2 + Faceit and other anticheats that require it, but as I get older than number goes down because I am not playing as many multiplayer things where people feel the need to cheat.

Except Valve does NOT have the capability to 'just' deliver hardware to your local store. That's the whole reason why the Deck could only be purchased direct from Steam.

In any case, this will once again be a flop. What valve doesn't understand is that people who want a more 'open' device already have PCs. The console userbase just doesn't care and will attach itself to the biggest name. Steam deck was somewhat successful solely due to the novelty of it being a portable machine, making the PC enthusiast market be curious enough to justify purchasing what is essentially a 2nd PC in a mini format. A mini ATX PC disguised as a console will not turn heads.

When it gets in the >700$ range like these consols will inevitably be, it becomes less of a "I am curious enough to buy this and it will not set me back financially considerable" and more of a "How can I justify buying this expensive product when I already have a similar thing and could instead buy XYZ that I NEED instead".
