It didn't have a plan other than terraria space, while not actually understanding the gameplay that made terraria work.

Lots of minor things, but that's the core of it.

Tried to be Terraria with more of a scifi aesthetic and traveling to different planets instead of playing on one world, your ship being a mobile base. Ended up with way too many ideas guys in the company so nothing got done. Every planet was half assed. They destroyed the free roam aspect and forced you into a set of storyline missions. It never got better through any kind of update, only worse, and they basically abandoned it. Great idea, but the people actually making it were incompetent

tried to be terraria but with a many worlds gimmick
turns out gimmick doesn't quite work in a game where youre supposed to build a permanent base.
Then tones of promised features were scrapped and development abandoned.
Game released in a gutted state barely held together with a shitty excuse of a story it has.

Having a team of only artists and no one to actually make a game, let alone fulfilling the promises they made at the start.
I get that they had experience working on Terraria, but it was all on art. It's kind of sad that the best iteration of the game was the very first extremely rough version they put out.

Last time I played?
Clusterfuckery. Menus everywhere, hints, pop-ups to go to places, to grab mandatory quests, to go to places, to unlock other menus, to go to more mandatory quests, to unlock hubs, to do preview things that you can't do yet, etc.

There was no reason for any of that. It became a railroaded nonsense filled with pointless noise and riddled with mandatory mods to even make it feasible to enjoy.

They made terraria in space and then turned it into a linear narrative game instead while actively cutting all their interesting features like procedural guns.

Nah it worked even back then. Uou could mark a planet as your home and you could teleport back to it at any time from anywhere, I'm pretty sure. But there was no incentive to because food was just sort of a meme nobody cared about so crops don't matter and the space ship does everything you need it to otherwise.

The problem is the ships all had a pre defined layout and look based on your characters race. In Terraria you can make your base look like whatever you want

Tried to be Terraria with a sci-fi twist but missed the mark.

Absolutely. The game's ambition was evident, but it lacked the core elements that made Terraria great. The shift from a single, cohesive world to fragmented planets disrupted the building and exploration experience. Instead of enhancing the gameplay, it diluted it.

Moreover, the overcomplicated menus and mandatory quests created a sense of directionlessness. Players found themselves navigating through a maze of tasks without a clear purpose, detracting from the enjoyment.

It's a classic case of overambition without a solid foundation. The game's potential was overshadowed by its execution.

Wish you could that in Terraria.
Anonymous No.718666220
Progression is king in these type of games.
Having well structured progression/exploration makes for a fun game.
The way they did their planets and procedural generation made it dogshit. Even terarria took a while to fine tune how far you can progress in what biome and what bosses you can fight. Starbound was just bad. It was 1000 flavours of bland with its planets.

If anyone says that games like this are shit just because it has some things that need to be fixed with mods have never played a truly bad game before. Any games that has mods goes up a lot higher in my book just as you have a whole range of awesome user made content.
If you want a shit game look a something like Superman 64, Action 52 or Back to the Future II and III.
Anonymous No.718666816
>>718659237 (OP)
Very little diversity of shit to do. Too few biomes, too few pre-built points of interest. There is so little of everything, I'd say you can fit it on single planet. Whole concept of space travel is there just to spread it and waste time. Basically, 2D Starfield.
Story is shit.
Bosses were lame.
"Mechs" were terribly tacked on.
Incredibly poor itemization that was at first balanced out by sometimes completely broken randomly generated weapons, but devs removed that.
Colony building system is pointless.
However, it looks good and some environments were really great in terms of lighting.
Also, monke wives.

Early access took forever and was empty. Release put out shit story to justify bosses it didn't have in early access, with worlds still largely empty. Too many empty worlds to fly around to, defeated the purpose of putting it in space to begin with. Gameplay wasn't very good, not enough variety anyway.

Mods solve some of these problems, especially the larger total conversion mods such as fracking universe and others, but it was a wasted opportunity.

I like it just because of the variety in systems it adds, most items end up having multiple sources instead of just one. You can get solarium ore from beekeeping if you want. The new biomes are neat too. While it somewhat improves the gameplay loop, combat and such still feel quite awful

Forgot to mention that I wish they cut down on the number of new races, the vanilla ones are pretty unique when it comes to their gimmick while half of the FU are underwhelming as fuck. The Peglaci only exist because there was no race specializing in ice biomes but then they forgot to get them any unique mechanic/tech or even weapons, same for the ugly dragonpeople where they saw the crystal weapons and thought they should add a race for that reason alone.
Anonymous No.718668975

They removed 75% of the game's content before release so they could cram in a terrible, badly-paced, uninteresting story.
And also fucked up all of the species lore to retarded degrees.
>humans going from natural spacefarers with a dream to explore, to being little babies that got so homesick that they isolated themselves on Earth and invited every other species to live there (and are now teetering on the brink of extinction because a cult destroyed the only planet they inhabited)
