Windows 11 update brick SSDs
https://www.techpowerup.com/340032/microsoft-windows-11-24h2-update-may-cause-ssd-failures

Update KB5063878 will brick your SSD and permanently destroy it, if you have a Phison NAND controller on your SSD then you are more likely to be fucked. If you download or patch anything 50+GB it will cause your storage devices to disappear, you can try to restart your PC to make it reappear but the damage is already done.

To repair it, do an in place upgrade by going to this link, download the ISO and select keep all files in the install window. Then don't download any new updates while on this new repair install.

Assuming this is real and not homosexual, it still wouldn't be Microsoft's fault. Standard operation of a storage device driver shouldn't cause the device to be bricked.
This is probably the driver developers writing non-conformant code. Some sort of a hacky workaround to circumvent OS limitations that relies on undefined behaviour.

"Undefined behaviour" here meaning that they relied on behaviour of the *Windows API* that wasn't in the specifications, not of the programming language. Refactoring the same hacks to Rust would not have fixed it.

Here's a Japanese test of SSDs
3 goods, you're in the clear (For now)
Not good lvl 1 or lvl 2 you're fucked.

However take this with a grain of salt and remove the update anyway, because there isn't many people reporting tests.

Anything over 50GB+ (62GB approximately) or multiple file transfers of 200 each being 200mb will also brick it

That’s the thing, right? If a damn Windows update can outright brick hardware just by writing large files, that screams “firmware spaghetti” more than anything. It’s like these Phison controllers were duct-taped together just enough to pass QC, and Redmond poked them the wrong way. Yeah, MS doesn’t get a free pass for not testing edge-case hardware, but this feels more like jank-tier vendor firmware finally getting exposed. Wouldn’t be surprised if the SSD firmware was doing pointer gymnastics with NAND wear leveling like it’s 2003.

buy them Like New from amazon resale. they are usually just open box returns. I buy all my drives this way. just check them with crystaldiskinfo using an external usb enclosure and return them if it looks used or label swapped. register the SN at samsung.com and if you ever need warranty service say you dont have proof of purchase because it was a gift.

I also buy geek squad refurbished ssds from bestbuy this way, but usually they are slighly more used (like a weeks worth of writes and power ons reported) they arent refurbished at all. just returns.

> Further analysis has suggested that SSDs built on Phison NAND controllers especially DRAM-less models exhibit failures at lower write volumes.

If we're going to be passing blame like that, I think we should pin it on the x86 architecture.
>What do you mean device drivers are capable of arbitrarily interfacing with every system component in ways that are potentially not supported by the kernel? There should be a lower security ring that enforces precise interfaces between devices, drivers, and the kernel so that such bodges are caught as errors!

Oh wait, x86 does have that feature, doesn't it? Alright, I guess it's Microsoft's fault.

Anonymous No.718689405 [Report]
Windows doesn't directly control the SSD, it's just telling the controller what it wants and the controller manipulates the NAND in a way to complete the task. If there is something Windows can tell the controller to make it crash out like this then the fault lies with the controller. And I suspect that this update in fact does NOT break the SSD in any way because these controllers are in fact designed to be fairly robust and it's just Windows causing data corruption.
Think of it this way, a video game requests the GPU to do such and such. The game is not aware of the thermals, power use and other metrics related to the GPU. It's just asking the GPU to do certain things. It doesn't know if the GPU is running at almost idle 50W or going full throttle at 400W. You cannot blame the game for telling the GPU to do a certain thing and the GPU being designed so it can do it fast enough at a certain power usage. The whole card housing the GPU should be designed in a way that can handle the 400W indefinitely or at least throttle when it detects it cannot maintain that.

People turning it into Linux vs Windows war are a special breed of retarded. Linux has always had far, far more robust I/O. At the same time, Windows was and is still is ahead in many other aspects like the compositor and having a stable API that video game developers can target without worrying about updating an otherwise finished product for years to come which is why there's a joke in the Linux community that Win32 is the most stable API on Linux.
Use whichever OS you like better, contrary to what idiots on this niggerfaggot website are telling you BOTH are fine.

As we're reminded everyday, the PCMR uses Windows OS and this is part of the PC Vegan Redditor master race experience, so this is on-topic. PC gaming has super high prices for PC parts like 16GB GPUs, Intel CPUs from the last 4 years have oxidation which is killing them over time. There are PC game developers who put in the Steam forums FAQs notifying Intel users their processors are at fault and not themselves. And now we have SSDs exploding internally from PC Veganism.

Fantastic stuff really. Ouroboros eating its own tail for /v Valve/ PC fanboys.
