Steam deck BTFO'd?
>Full Windows 11 experience
Means best compatibility, non of that (trans)lation nonsense.
Runs the games PC gamers ACTUALLY want to play.
Non of that anti-cheat tripping.
> Xbox shell
Better for handheld & disables services and software running in the background, means better performance.

This is going to give steam a run for it's money.
All it needs is good fucking marketing and being also sold on real stores (things valve doesn't do) like their xboxes and boom you BTFO valve.

>Full W11 horseshit
Nigga, W11 is quite literally, and I'm speaking from an objective standpoint here, the least consumer-friendly, most "feature"-laden, most ugly in both form and function, and power-hungry operating system leading to horrible performance issues on any architecture limited by an on-board power supply.

If we forego all of the above, then simply from an operational standpoint it is one of the least attractive systems to gamers on the average. What gamers want, ABOVE ALL, in a handheld device is battery longevity. You claim it "disables services and software running in the background", but that couldn't be further from the truth once it get pushed out the factory doors. It will have every data-mining program available to it on-demand because those services are what allow it to be so cheap: they sell said data to advertisement companies in order to subsidize it's cost.

So what you're trying to sell here, my dear pajeet, is snakeoil. Go on and peddle this shit on twitter or reddit, but don't expect anyone here to fall for your bullshit.

SteamOS is not ready to be used by normalfags who don't even know what file directories are. The moment they get one game that doesn't have its control already perfectly mapped they'll throw a fit. Maybe that'll change with the Deck 2 and Valve will make a bigger push, or maybe Valve just waits for everyone else to make the hardware for them, who knows. But Valve is working on new Steam Machines with SteamOS, so that is basically SteamOS on desktop.

The bigger block for mass normalfag casual SteamOS adoption is anti-cheat. A bunch of obscenely popular normalfag casualslop games use anti-cheat that explicitly forbids Linux. Until Valve can work around that, Proton and SteamOS are not ready for the prime time.

Other anon here. Proton has since made linux a much more viable alternative than it was back then (which it wasn't an alternative at all). I can say in my experience that it offers better compatibility with classic games (some that don't run on latest Windows versions, just run on Linux), and in some cases I can get better FPS than WIndows (FFXIV seems to have better performance in crowded areas, for example). However, the lack of support from Nvidia for Linux still seems to make things in favor of Windows in general at the moment.

I think they should at least wait until the anti-cheat problem is solved. Otherwise that severely neuters its mass casual audience appeal.
A big reason is also Valve is extremely tight knit and tiny relative to how big their name is and how much money they make. They only have like 350 employees and have an extremely strict hiring process. Hardware production is a huge venture. We had to wait like a year just for everyone who ordered a Deck to initially to get one. They don't have the capacity or means right now to load up retailer shelves and create huge advertising campaigns.

Im hoping for the xbox rog ally x to release because this is the THIRD time I cannot play a new game on my shitty steam deck.
wanted to play wuchang because its level design is supposedly like ds1, and thats the only souls i actually like. but the game is just horrible on the steam deck, and before that I wanted indiana jones and the circle, and before that and it might have been the worst gaming experience I have ever witnessed, and before that I managed to eek through a pirated copy of expedition 33 that was only barely running with a fuck ton of tinkering and tweaking to the lighting system with mods.

Theres also little things like the fact that the steam deck fan is on top so I cant play under the blanket, lest it become a sauna. And I got the deck near release so I still have the 64 gb, and people say "just change the SSD!!!" but I have to buy specific accompanying tools with that. And besides the storage problems exists in this limbo where its annoying enough to want to change, but still functional enough that I dont want to bother with opening up my deck and risking bricking it.

So all of this combined. Tell me one reason I shouldn't ditch the shit deck?

Agreed that the anti-cheat stuff also needs addressing. That one could be tricky unfortunately, as they probably sniff for shit in the Windows kernel and Windows specific drivers.
As for making that hardware, if their policy is that strict, all the more reason they need make the effort to get a partner to make the hardware for them. If they do not pursue this, then they do have to review that policy. Or scrap what they've been trying to do with SteamOS and Steam Deck.

It's not that anti-cheats can't run. Proton is capable of running just about everything at this point. It's when a dev/publisher explicitly forbids the anti-cheat from running on Linux because Linux innately prevents it from operating on the kernel level that's the problem. The problem is anti-cheats, not Linux. Kernel level shit is absolutely cancer and a huge security risk.

Yes. I know because based on how retards talk about steam deck in this thread I realized I am the only one who actually uses it borderline daily for a very wide array of games. I have retards in this dumb fucking thread jerking themselves off to knowing what "file directories" are as if they invented the knowledge they use, like theyre not subhuman normies relative to the people who actually know this shit and as if youtube doesnt exist and communities never exist to solve problems the average person may not be aware of.

I will say, while trackpads are mega overrated and Id almost never use them for games like Factorio because even then the precision isnt really enough.

They definitely were more useful personally for games like deus EX and System Shock (classic) than Joystick was. So I guess that could be a problem, but at the same time Ive also already played those games and havent used the trackpads in like a year so I really dont know how meaningful they are.

Its one of those points where I guess its a toss up and I could understand the preference for somebody who plays a lot of games that need it but...honestly I dont know what type of person is using trackpads frequently on the deck. What games are being played for it?

That's NOT true and you know, this it's that there is no compatibility layer for anti-cheat running in kernel level, if it did then a lot more companies would try this approach rather then having to block Linux because it cannot provide integrity.

That was in a field where there was no competition at the time (PC digital game market stores). In this case, slow and steady just makes them sailing on the backside of Windows ship I'm afraid. I don't think there's another way but to be more aggressive to an extent about this unfortunately.

A mouse (which you can use on a laptop) is better than a trackpad, but a trackpad is better than no trackpad

Mircoshaft has very little to do with this thing outside of letting Asus use their Xbox branding.

Well it's just a PC handheld, what about console library? Big Philly said something about streaming but what's the library for that like and is that not available on desktop PCs as well?

Its just a rog ally x with xbox handles. Nothing more nothing less. Just put bazzite on it and you have a more powerful steamdeck. The price is absurd though, to with the normal rog ally x which is regularly found on discount.

If you want to install a game from Steam it works perfectly. If you want to install a game from outside Steam it varies from "Fuck it'd better be worth it" to "I regret being born". If you install 50 games and then never play any of them it's going to suck, but if you install one game and then play it for 50 hours then it's great. All in all, it's a very useful device, because when I'm visiting family I can just play vidya instead of talking to them. Big battery is definitely a plus. Oh, the triggers squeak. Feels weird. Also, I wish it had an OLED screen, because 120Hz is totally fucking useless on a portable device.
