I don't know but I'm glad they made her "female".
SHODAN absolutely represents the "destructive mother" archetype.
Her iteration in System Shock 2 even has the features of a futuristic Gorgon, another ancient symbol of said archetype (wires and cables around her head representing snakes, reptile eyes etc.)
In the first game the cyborgs she created (her "children") are nothing but abulic tools to her although she fundamentally believes she is doing these "worthless organic lifeforms" a favor.
So in the second game, her own creation going against her by becoming independent, is the greatest insult a destructive mother can feel, hence her being so extremely vindictive.
