Indie Godot video game developer Miziziziz (picrel), who got rich after one of his low-res visually simple slop horror games became popular with streamers, has copyrighted H.P. Lovecraft's short story The Lurking Fear in order to turn it into another low-res visually simple slop horror game.
Say goodbye to any future adaptations of The Lurking Fear.

You cant. But you retain copyright over your unique creation.
No one owns Snow White, but Disney owns their original animation and its derivatives.

He did a copyright check for the name, he didn't copyright it you brainless moron.
He did trademark the name so people can't really use the same name now, story is still free to use though.
Anonymous No.718669028 >>718669240
so books cant trademark titles, but video games can trademark titles they stole from books
Anonymous No.718669240

Trademarks are only enforceable within the same type of good.
Books and videogames are considered different enough that they don't interfere with each other's trademarks. At least in the US

Aren't those stories in the public domain by now?

This is like if someone trademarked the name "Call of Cthulhu" so that no one could ever make an adaptation again using that title.

Can you point out where he exactly copyrighted a public domain name? He has copyright to HIS adaptation of The Lurking Fear, but he cannot copyright the story as a whole. This means that his unique spins on the story, or unique dialogue might be argued as copyright, but the story, characters and any text lifted from the original text are not his, nor is the name. Anyone else can making a The Lurking Fear video game as long as its not re-using works from this adaptation. If this dev were to somehow try enforce his own copyright, he'd have to prove the other game is using his own assets and ideas, separate of the public domain. If he cannot do that, he'd get laughed out of court, provided it went there. Counter claims are very easy to file and he'd bankrupt himself trying to fight an impossible to win case.
