in fact not just games but most things in life, i have zoom zooms in my family and the most of them have about zero (0) initiative and cannot perform any task without being handheld from start to finish

I never got flash back in the day and just assumed I was supposed to beat the dark dungeon areas in darkness.

At least with Pokemon Red, if you choose Charizard, his Pokemon don't have high special defense, so Ember spamming still works. Be the poor kid who bought Yellow First like me and get filtered before finding out I can catch a fucking Mankey to beat Brock with.

As a whole? No. Gen 3 is the closest. Swampert line is probably on par with Gen 1. As a final evos, Torterra, Swampert, and Blaziken hold up compared to Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard.

Pokemon games are the hardest RPGs because you can’t level grind in them. If you raise bad ‘mons you are literally screwed. Only trainer battles give reasonable EXP, wild Pokemon EXP is so minuscule.

The Empoleon line really drags that gen down compared to Gen 3. Worst Gen 3 got was Treeko. The Infernape line is very good and would be comparable to Blaziken but it has two black marks against it: the line started the fire/fighting trend, chimchar has the modern pokeslop design hallmarks. For Torterra line, its blemish is the middle evo looks bad.

playing it now, i try to be well rounded, but you can solo the game with squirtle (and charmander if you can grind a little in the begining)
Just use him and only him, heal a lot
bubble>water gun>bubblebeam>surf
keep bite around for a while
dig (then earthquake later on) and ice beam deal with all the type issues
you can solo the E4 ez with surf/earthquake/ice beam (whatever you want for the 4th, reflect or body slam or something)
Just save your elixers/ethers and make sure to use all your pp ups
the rest of your team can be hm slaves

it's similar to using cyndiquil in g/s/c, you can solo it incredibly easy by having thunder punch
