The message is that fiction is sometimes preferable to truth if the truth is too painful or traumatic.
What I still don’t understand, however, is the author’s stance on the “rules” of mystery fiction like those of Knox and Van Dine. Umineko simultaneously misrepresents them and says they’re outdated, whilst also trying to adhere to them and claim that Umineko is a fair mystery (lol) because it adheres to them (it doesn’t).
