Ironic isn't it? That Nintendo is the only aaa games company that admits it's hard and they're also the only ones who still make games instead of movies.

Fuck sony. THIS is the face of a real man! Look at how hard he works! He's a hero. An inspiration.

ITT we respect Sakurai.

I wish Sakurai would narrate every direct. He clearly knows enough about other games to do it. His commentary is way more entertaining and off-the-cuff (seemingly) than the corpo reps they usually bring on.

Hell, just put a little “live Sakurai reaction” in the top left corner of trailers and let him talk about some autistic bullshit

Absolutely. I think it's worth noting how much time he dedicates to explaining how small things like how drifting works and how much of a tragedy it is that he had to add another button to the layout.

He's just very passionate about making cool stuff and he's good at communicating the effort behind small crrative choices. It's like the opposite of what those interviews with the horizon zero dawn team were in which the script for the interview had nothing to do with what the devs probably felt about their own game.

probably iwata was a special case of a person who had a knack for the business part too. Sakurai and Koizumi are very creative people but perhapd theyre just not interested in that kind of role.

Man, i miss iwata. I dont think things are necessarilly better or worse than when he was around. But he certainly gave confidence that there was someone who cared behind it all, stupid decisions included.

Nintendo is like a 200 year toy company that started making card games.

They're not a tech company like american companies.

That's why they keep winning, because they're run like a small japanese family store, instead of le big monolitic CEO investor american shit.

Nintendo makes indie tier games and charges $60– I mean $70-$80 for them.

i think a big part of their secret is the toy aspect of it. They are a lot more aware and knowledgeable of what kind of product they actually sell. Western scene sees games as media such as movies, books, etc. There are certain tropes to them and as long as you have a writer you have a potential game because the technique is already sorted out.

Nintendo understands videogames beyond being media or even beyond being games. Theyre just toys, and toys dont need deep stories necessarilly, nor complex rules like some kind of table top game. Toys need to be fun to mess around with and poke at your imagination. And there isnt much set in stone for toys beyond that.

It's actually two competing philosophies of game design.

One see games a toys, where the theme and story are just nice dressing to the mechanics.

So you would see chess but waifus and chess with medieval monsters as the same game mechanically.

The other philosophy see games as a narrative medium, and see mechanics as the tools to drive a narrative.

So, chess about idol girls and with a VN mode about a K-ON group, would be radically than chess but about medieval knights.

The issue is to me that the narrative approach always seems to be pushed towards JRPGs and narrative heavy games, and certain graphical styles that hollywood loves.

To me narrative versus mechanics is a false dichotomy, because my ideal is a story less as a traditional story, but closer to more like the theme and excuse for the characters to fight.

Something like kof 97 but with a similar story and story mechanics from FFIV or SMW.

Im going to say that i agree that there are roughly 2 phylosophies competing and that they more or less consist in what you said.

But I personally think that theres is one thats just better than the other in general, which would be the japanese approach. Mostly because i dont think the japanese neglect narrative depth as a condition, or that it hinders the mechanics if the narrative is good. Its more of hierarchy of values, and generally the japs understand that games are mostly an interactive medium with its own rules and horizons to conquer, and the japs have been a lot more ambitious with them. Interactivity should generally be the main focus of the devs, and the story should be very much adapted to be told around whatever interactivity system is designed. Of course nintendo is a paradigm of this wsy of thinking, yet it still has had games with reasonably sound stories in the past. But even shit like FF, which sounds like games where gameplay is secondary to the story, were games that dared to experiment with presentation, story length and even toying with the mechanics here and there in order to make an entertaining ride in a wsy that western games just didnt even dared to back in the 90s.

In comparison, western games mostly just take what has been working and selling well and decide that any story can be told in a RE4 style of presentation, and that we just need more graphics and stories that could tonally fit in whatever current streaming media is popular right now. There is absolutely no thought put in wether the mechanics service the stories in any way, and japanese games arent remotely as limited in this regard.

Of course theres all sorts of greys and exceptions here. Classic pc gaming is a completely different story and the japs have no business there, and also we could talk about eurojank games and all sorts of interesting shit thats produced outside of japan. But roughly speaking, in what console gaming concerns, the japs just know better.

I think you have a point into what japanese seems to do better than westerners.

Also, that narrative approach seems flawed to me.

But I also thinking that westerners have interesting designers like will wright.

Freeciv, Age of Empires 2, Red alert, gnomoria, dwarve fortress, spelunky, are among my favorite games of all time.

So, who is the young promise of the company? Because Miyamoto is almost retired, Anouma is just there and Sakurai can't make games forever.
In fact I'm kinda surprised that there is not a lot of young popular game devs out there in general, only Toby Fox comes to mind, and he is an indie dev

Nintendo doesn’t seem to be trying to go for the “one popular dev” but rather bolstering their teams as a whole. Closest thing to what you describe would be the splatoon devs given the game/ip was largely created by some of nintendo’s youngest staff, and it skyrocketed into one of their biggest ip’s
Remember reading some interview where miyamoto was asked if he was concerned about what the future of nintendo would be when he was gone and he said he wasn’t since they’re constantly training new hires. All in all they seem pretty secure and future-proofed

The whole "Ordnung" concept as fundamental to culture is simply revolting inasmuch as it involves a rigid standarization of thought, a nightmarish compromise between the idealistic revelry and technological fanaticism begetting the sort of Faustian condition that for centuries fueled righteous and otherwise nefarious behaviour on to this day —that no other country (that I have been to, at least) truly shares.

t. actual German, I love my country, precisely why I remain critical of it. You Äuslander always miss the mark.
