Why does this shitty Metroidvania nr. 2425 get so much attention? Just because the amateurish developer needed 10 years for a sequel? The first game is boring af, ugly af, has shitty controls, doesn't have any new ideas and clearly just jumped onto the Dark Souls trend in terms of boss focus and presentation

I've always hated sidescrolling 2D slop like this because it is inherent that the devs chose this style because they didn't want to do the extra work of making a 3D game.

Because it's shallow pond with decent presentation. You'll never find any depth or difficulty in it, but you can wade for along as you want and then put it down when you feel satisfied. Most people who play it don't finish it, but who cares if they've already bought it? Unlike Dark Souls it also filters a significantly smaller group of people by virtue of them just losing interest in playing it rather than hitting a skill wall.

I've tried playing it twice and just can't get into it. Map just feels like it's massive for no reason and I get bored exploring. The vanias I like are tightly designed with every room being unique like animal well for example. Happy they've finally gotten a release date for silksong.

I believe it came out to capture the zoomer audience. The movement is floaty and the level design is amateur hour. I wouldn't mind them liking this turd so much but the problem is that because the baby's first metroidvania retards keep shouting how incredible it is, it keeps affecting other upcoming titles. I think HK is the HIV of metroidvanias and it managed to cause irrepairable damage. If I could delete one game from existence, it would probably be HK.

Hollow Knight did absolutely nothing special or unique. It’s literally just another generic Metroidvania Souls-like but with slightly better visuals than the average Metroidvania Souls-like. You lose your souls when you die and have an opportunity to get it back if you return to where you died, you play in a mysterious and dark fallen kingdom with le deep LORE about a CURSE that is eating away at the land. You meet NPCs on the verge of insanity that give you little pieces of obscure le lore dialogue. You jump on platforms, engage in some bog-standard Metroidvania combat, find new equipment that expands your movement, all typical for the Metroidvania Souls-like genre.

Where this game struck gold is having a modern animation/cartoony look that appealed to gen z. In addition, for most of Gen z, this was their first exposure to Metroidvanias so it truly blew their minds. They had never seen a game like this + most of them never played a Souls or Souls-like until Elden Ring released 5 years later + it had a relatable, cutesy, infantalized visual style that looks like it was made by their favorite youtube animator. Basically it was a tailor made recipe to appeal to transgenders/band kids from Gen Z, all while the game itself is nothing special and is easily comparable to any of the other Metroidvania Souls-like corporate indie slops that clog online game stores.
