PSP
I really like it, I kinda wish modern handhelds had half the features and cool stuff the PSP has
I really like the game selection, there are so many gems and stuff to play
The main menu or whatever it’s called makes me cream, those clicks and woops hit the spot so much
It’s so easy to mod too and it’s still in that era where portables were actually portable, I can just put it in my pants, really nice, still the gba sp beats it’s portability, I love it so much
Idk man I just want to see you guys talk about the PSP

Holding a PSP in your hands and turning it on for the first time back in 2005 felt like opening a window into the future. It was sci-fi as fuck. That slick design, the stylish UI, the 3D graphics on a handheld, the media center features, soon it got an internet browser. Stuff you take for granted nowadays on even the shittiest cheapest phone, but back then it was incredible.

Owning a PSP during the mid 2000s was magical, it felt like living in the future, I watched so many anime and movies in bed, read so much manga, fappan using the web browser (that was new too, phone web browsers were garbage). Emulated the shit out of the SNES and GBA, the games themselves were crazy it was insane coming from GBA and being able to play the full phat PS2 tier games, played the shit out of Dissidia. I took it on trips and used it as an MP3 player.

My gf in high school had a PSP she used as a media player, I installed cfw for her and helped here pirate content, I believe it contributed to why we got together and stayed together for so long, we shared and talked about movies, TV shows and games, she saw me as this tech genius hackerman even though I was a normie.

PSP is cool in concept but UMDs were a horrible format and one analog nub was sorta lame, same with the 3DS. Aside from the well-worn, comedically stupid issues that dragged it down, Vita was all around just better hardware for playing PSP games on.

It's not just that PSP was good for the time, but that it was absolutely unique. Everything it did was a little janky, but only because it did so much first that it was years ahead. Even when the iphone came out, the PSP's screen was bigger than the whole iphone.
Flash memory was too expensive in 2004 to put the games and movies on. It was common for people to have small memory sticks, like 32mb, just for game saves. UMDs were a smart solution at the time. That was half of why no other device could compete with it. There was no DVD player small enough and no multipurpose or game device with as much storage. Later digital-only PSPs were made when flash memory was cheaper. Things changed so much like when PS Store came out on PSP, they were selling download movies, music, even comics as well as games and I upgraded my memory stick to 4gb, then to 16 and 64. My same PSP has now 200x the memory it had when I got it.

>1.8GB of data in 2005 is stupid
UMD was a great format, not Sony's fault that technology eventually caught up and we started seeing 32GB memory sticks for cheap. It's a really impressive technical feat actually to miniaturize a fully fledged optical drive like that.

>>718681391
I think the Vita memory card thing is overblown and a simple and appealing explanation for why the Vita failed that avoids thinking too hard about it. In reality you could get 8GB for relatively cheap and Sony started bundling their consoles with 8GB or 16GB pretty early. Furthermore it's more of a technicality, expensive accessories is not enough to kill a console like that.

Anonymous No.718690682
UMDs were a great idea when the PSP released but eventually became obsolete. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. I want a modern handheld to use that space for a bigger battery instead of wasting it on a disk or cartridge reader. Vita failed because it had no games, poor marketing and handhelds took a hit in popularity during that period. The Fat model was also notoriously fault prone. 3DS suffered from the same problems but Nintendo stuck with it and it eventually recovered. It didn't help that Sony was pivoting into high budget cinematic games that a handheld could never support. I think that if Sony released a new handheld that doesn't play PS4 and PS5 games (at lower res) but instead has its own library then even if the library is amazing and close to what PSP and 3DS had then it's going to flop because the audience Sony cultivated isn't interested in these types of games. Sony would need to again create the mindshare that they're home to these types of games and seeing how poorly Astro Bot sold relative to all the acclaim it got and wining the GOTY, I don't think that's happening soon.

I don't mind that big handhelds exist but it would be nice if smaller counterparts were available. They could have easily made a Vita sized or clamshell 3DS sized Switch Lite but they chose a design that was only slightly smaller with no chance of being pocketable. You're either trolling or you have something wrong with you. The effects ran so slowly the sound effects would be desynced multiple seconds depending on what skill you were using. It was such a lazy fuck port, and the recent remake for FFT basically confirms that the retarded fucking faggots didn't have the source code so they hacked together a shitty emulated romhack for it instead.
