"Backwards compatibility" to console peasants means buying the same game again, this time for more money then you paid for it last time, but it's "super HD definitive remastered edition" that was outsourced to Team Jeet and features "AI" upscaled textures, FMVs and a worse soundtrack and voice acting and no way to switch back.

Also the $600 price was only for the highest end model and within a few years it dropped to $299, there was a huge marketing push for that $299 and people bought it in droves.

Only the very first run of consoles had those features, by the the time it was released worldwide they had already cut a bunch of them, and they are almost as much of a tickling time bomb as the X360 anyway, that's the worst part.
Plus, they sound like a jet plane taking off, not really the best Blu-Ray you could get.
The Slim editions with the cutdown price are nice though.

Having DVD and BlueRay didn't mean diddle squat when DVDs prices dropped to rock bottom around that time, and as for CDs people where using ipods up the ass, the rest is mumble jumbo with no real merit when there wasn't games to play, the backwards compatibility was cool but spending 600$ just to keep playing PS and PS2 games was awful, the PS3 pricing was terrible, Sony knew it and the people knew it.

Anonymous No.718687532
>>718686470
The PS2 and PS3 were retro when they released because they were just copying the PS1 Dualshock controller with only minor alterations even after 90s consoles got left in the dust by PC's mouselook. The Dualshock 3 even deliberately discarded any aesthetic deviation from the OG dualshock so that it could keep being retro.
The 360 is also retro because it removed face buttons to be more like the Dreamcast, but the Xbox is not.

Fucking face it, the amount of consoles after the 2000s that aren't deliberately retro can be counted on one hand and pre-2000s consoles have become retro by way of embodying an older way of doing things.

Mom just told me to reduce the volume..

To answer your question, retro is a relative definition and shifts with time. It's not a fixed point in time like boomer, gen x, millennial, etc. Retro is everything 6th gen and below, probably will start including 7th gen pretty soon.
Atari and all the other pre-NES stuff will shift from retro to antique in a decade or two as well.

I mean, I don't disagree. The PS3 could play PS1 and PS2 discs natively, in addition to its own library. It had the built-in SD card readers in the front and 4 USBs in the front. After the PS3 Sony started fazing out features of PS4 and PS5. The fact PS5 cannot read PS1 discs is insane.

Technically retro doesn't refer to old things at all, it refers to new things in the style of old things, so if you want to go by the term then a new game that looks and feels like a PS3 game is retro, not an actual PS3 game.

Sure, in a vacuum it was worth it, Sony even took a loss on it, but we're talking about game consoles here, they are supposed to be cheap boxes that play video games for the masses, not premium products for a small minority that can afford them. It was a blunder from Sony's side, the 360 had similar capabilities when it comes to video games, better even in most cases and cost almost half of that.

Imo it's why the Switch 2 is gonna underperform long term, Nintendo misreads and misunderstands the market and their main audience. Then we get cope like "the market is shrinking", yeah no shit if you outprice the average normie living paycheck to paycheck they're gonna move to something else. I hope Valve can make the Deck 2 affordable and wreck the market to teach the niggers in charge at these companies a lesson.

I don't know how much samefaggotry is going on here (a lot I assume) but alottle hot take here:
Retro isn't defined by how much time has passed since release but by how much technological development has occurred since then. And since between NES and PS3 there was a much bigger leap than between PS3 and PS5 (and most likely any system that will follow it) PS3 is not retro (and most likely never will).

The difference is extremely obvious because of visuals. SNES to PS3 you can see the difference in game design from a screenshot alone. It's a completely different experience.
The 2022 best seller and industry defining Elden Ring is a minute iteration on how Dark Souls played on the PS3.
Same as DMC5 to DMC4, Ninja Gaiden 4 to Ninja Gaiden 2, Bayonetta 1 is still my favorite in the genre.
Now compare NES Ninja Gaiden to Ninja Gaiden 2.
PS3 games are modern.

Backwards compatibility was worthless. You could buy an Xbox 360 and a PS2 for less than a PS3.
It got even more ridiculous later on with the final retail price of a PS2 slim being 130 bucks. No point tacking on extra price on every PS3 when a brand new PS2 was that cheap. And that's not even taking into account how most people already had a PS2 and used ones were worth even less.

Worth $600? Sure
Needed to play video games? Not at all. The USB ports, Micro card slots, RSX GPU, HDMI and backwards compatiblity were great bonuses for it, but for people who play video games, Sony really struggled to market it in a way that would make people actually see the result of the RSX GPU.

Its also worth keeping in mind that the PS3 that was backwards compatible FULLY is only the base 20GB launch PS3, which had no Wi-Fi and no flash card reader.
As much as the Blu-ray and graphical synthesizer were COOL and they were unique, it for a lot of people, wasn't worth being $600 even IF the entire package was worth it for all the features it did have.
People wanted a console.

It has NOTHING to do with how arbitrarily old it is (Vintage) or how noteworthy it was (Classic).

Yeah and hd media players were half that. We were laughing our asses off that we went to see the latest bluray shit and instead they were playing the same files we also downloaded.

Turns out it was hacked with a custom OS that had a shit ton of ps3 games, goth and fake mother/daughter porn downloaded directly from Xvideos.com and this song would instantly play on startup: https://youtu.be/NoyJgR_09Vw

it was a relic of the early 2010's from some dude who loved PS3 and fapping and I was sad when my ex got rid of the goth and faux incest videos after I showed her they were on it.

it was not worth it for upgrading of PS2. the backwards compatible was strange because everyone still had a PS2 and it's not like you could sell it since you could get one used for like 50 bucks at the time. nobody still had a HD TV yet, blu ray sitll barely had movies and it was expensive compared to DVDs, everyone still had a DVD or CD player too. it quite literally made no sense at the time why it felt like a upgrade other than being a new console. the Xbox 360 did the transition right, and it felt like you actually got value of the money of the time. yes the PS3 made it up years later but nobody was actually certain new technologies were going to stay, people just wanted a new console to play games on and Sony didn't do much for that in the first year of it

Xbox ran into licensing with their backwards compatibility that kept many titles from being available and it's likely Sony would as well. There was no technical reason why the Xbox One and the Series X couldnt have been fully backwards compatible with the entire libraries. Gaming companies don't want you to have the ability to just buy a game once and keep playing it forever. They'd must rather just spruce up the old version slightly call it a "Remaster" and then try selling it to you again at full price on your current gen system.

It's a very complex system with parts that have been discontinued entirely, namely the exotic CPU that can't be easily replaced. There will be a time where there will be almost zero functioning phat PS3s and way more classic systems like the NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PSX, etc. A darn shame. I still have many fond memories with my PS3.

Xbox for playing with friends and allt he community stuff that the NXE had going on at the time. The golden age, basically. Then I picked up my PS3 just before the outage specifically for Mortal Kombat 9, and it ended up being my single-player relaxation hub.

I had some really nice animated backgrounds and used it to play all of my music. PS Home was criminally underrated. The freebie games after the outage were nice and kind of cemented it as my solo console. Been on PS since although I still get xbox peripherals for my PC.

We were so wrapped up in console wars that we didn't realize how good everything really was at the time, or maybe all the shit going on now just placed the bar for satisfaction in hell.

But you're wrong in your definition. It's a (you) problem if you can't see the differences between modern games and 7th gen, spoiler: it's not just graphics. Naming new series iterations from creatively bankrupt companies doesn't help you either.
Back in 7th gen big game companies were bolder with new IPs, the games themselves weren't concerned for checking all the boxes, and the technology was there to let you tell a story much better than even a gen6 game could. Even when you look at snoy games, there's a massive gap between gen8 and gen7 exclusives alone.

The rest of the post I agree with, it's a bit sad ps3 got the preferential treatment for no apparent reason at all. I mean, it wouldn't cost them anything significant to release the expanded versions on x360 too, unless sony was paying them for exclusivity (I doubt that).

When it comes to ps3's battery life, its true that it drains faster than the 360. On the other hand though, you have to buy batteries for the 360 controller and if you use rechargeable batteries, the battery holder sags(rechargeable batteries are heavier) and you get frequent disconnects. This sucks hard. The only good thing about the 360 controller is that its a very robust controller. You probably can even kill a bear with it and still go back and play vidya like nothing happened. Unfortunately, the battery holder sucks, its wireless connectivity is weak, and the Dpad is pure ass. Finally, with the 360 controller, you can aim better on FPS games but you can't play fighting games at all. So in the end, the ps3 controller is just better than the 360.

The YLOD ratio was like 1 every 100 consoles but the RROD was like 1 every 3 consoles. I myself tossed my RROD'd 360 and bought a slim ps3 and never looked back. The question isn't even about battery life, but longevity. First revision dualshocks right now simply have dead batteries.
I'd say that DS3 is also pretty robust. If you clean them thoroughly, they still work great, unlike DS2 with its dogshit membrane. You really need to deliberately damage the DS3 for it to permanently malfunction, same for 360 (which mogs series controller in every single way possible, it's not even funny). Damn, gen7 was the time for quality controllers for sure.
Also 360's triggers are much, much better than DS3's, because DS3's triggers are technically the same as their other buttons, while 360 has a whole contraption under the hood. It's really sad they couldn't just make a good dpad to perfectly round up the controller. 360's bumpers also use switches instead of a membrane, that helps too (however, I've had a case where one of the bumpers had the whole switch with its metal casing slightly bent, probably due to improper storage conditions).
Also idk about disconnects, I had them once on my oldest 360 pad, and I found some 10+yo guide that told me to bend the metal plate on the battery holder a bit, and it now werks perfectly. Oh, and also 360 controller is much easier to turn off, which is occasionally convenient.
