If a game has half of both, I think you'd argue that both groups would be happy, but my intuition would lead me to believe that the same number of people would be satisfied no matter what the distribution is, as every black character added is a white customer who drops it, and every white character is a black customer who drops it - however, actual data suggests we're both wrong and NEITHER will like it. When you pander to everyone, you end up pandering to no one, because no one wants to live in a melting pot full of aliens and potential traitors to their in-group. But nobody harasses black people for wanting black characters, they only harass white people for wanting white characters.
