Mini discs killed it more than not having online. Missing games like GTA III/Vice City/San Andreas, Burnout 3 and many others because of disc size limitations screwed it over hard. Also too many "games for everyone (kids)" that ruined it's already childish image. When Mario with a water squirter, Saturday morning cartoon Zelda and litearlly Animal Crossing are the big marquee games of your console, that's a problem. The little Easter Egg of holding down the Z button on bootup didn't help either with a literal baby laughing in the background after the little rubber ducky/squish toy noises stopped. Melee was good, but it wasn't beating Tekken Tag Tournament, CvS2 (the gamecube EO version was garbage) and Dead of Alive at the time. It got the best guest character in Soul Calibur though. Also even though I said other factors hurt it more than no online (like the gimped controller with jellybean buttons), having online would have helped a lot too.

Piracy, piracy rates on xbox maybe didn't reach massive as psx or ps2, but it helped a lot to make xbox well know in vidyasphere.

Take into account xbox got its sales only in europa and north américa. Gamecube got theirs in japan and USA.

Swap Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine's release date, and swap Wind Waker and Twilight Princess' release date. Give it full size disc support, and don't cheap out on the DVD license.

I think just real DVD and a less experimental controller would have made it sell like ten million more at least without costing one penny more. The rest of the hardware was actually fine.

From a marketing perspective it would have been better to have the more sleek looking silver panasonic DVD one over the multi-colored toy thing. Nintendo already had brand damage from appearing too "kiddy" and that certainly didn't help.

I never owned one. I am not sure if it even needed saving. What I played of it which wasn't much was pretty good. I guess if I had to take a guess on things that could have at least improved it...

1. Use proper discs
2. Perhaps also design it to be a built in dvd player + console (though this would likely mean Nintendo sells GC at a loss)
3. Left shoulder button so that it has the standard 4 shoulder and 4 face buttons setup.
4. A proper right stick (same exact shape as the left stick)
5. Sticks are clickable
6. Support M rated games and allow for them on the console (no GTA is a huge loss for example)

Really it should have just been closer in its design to the Xbox and PS2. I think MS and Sony were able to read where the market and gamers back in the day were shifting where as Nintendo was staying in their stubborn old ways. The industry was growing with Millennials from the days of the NES going into the 7th gen of consoles. I would say after the 360/PS3/Wii generation that is when you had an exodus of many millennials that were starting to grow out of the industry and in its place zoomers start to be the primary gaming audience. Millennials that stayed manchildren such as us do not count btw.

The disk size was truly the biggest bottleneck for the console, development wise, with many games just not being feasible given the gulf between 1.5gb and 5 or so gb, especially with so many open world games making splitting disks unfeasible.
Still, there is the whole "Nintendo is for kiddies" stigma that they were struggling to escape from. Adding DVD playback would have given it more of a fighting chance against the PS2 (which, as a Nintendo Fag, I legitimately cannot see a timeline where the GameCube EVER beat the PS2, even with any of these hypothetical changes, though it probably would have been able to beat the Xbox), but part of me doubts that Nintendo would bother paying for the implementation fee or whatever, given how the Wii could have played DVDs, but didn't unless you homebrew'd the system.

So yeah, Using actual full sized disks would have given the GameCube the ability to score 2nd place in that generation rather than third.

The GameCube just didn't have its hand on the pulse of the industry at the time. Nintendo failed to read the market, they failed to see what types of games the west was gravitating towards, they stubbornly dragged their feet every step of the way, and when they finally tried to adapt, they did it in the clunkiest of ways (interviews in Playboy, tribal tattoos on Mario, suggestive marketing, edgy wolf Link). Say what you want about the Wii, but at the very least it was a breath of fresh air, it had novelty. The Wii U would be where Nintendo would face the mistakes made in the Wii era, but the GameCube wasn't doing anything better to really stand out from the competition.

And yes, 2003+ western gaming was a shitty era in general.

Unironically just use normal DVDs, the console is otherwise perfectly competitive with the PS2 and Xbox while having a great 1st party line up. But the lack of DVD playback (for casuals) and limited 3rd party support (due to the 1.4GB size limitation) really fucked the Gamecube over. My only other complaints with the console are relatively minor, like the lack of a 2nd Z-button and it being region locked.

Nintendo made some mistakes with the GC for sure but a lot of stuff was just out of their control. The biggest misstep was the game format. Nintendo recognized a lot of this stuff, and that's why the Wii exists. Some of these were handled with the Wii, and some of them they chose not to handle, hence why they went after casuals instead.

Nintendo hates online and still does today. The online for their games since Wii always sucked ass because they make them anti-social, very barebones for modes online, etc.
