i categorize games as rpgs if you can create a character at the beginning of the game that you then control
ideally you should be able to choose the race, class, name, appearance (and sometimes backstory, religion etc) of the character
thats what makes an rpg, simply having stats doesnt make a game an rpg

this is also why i dont consider ff especially ff7 rpg, youre controlling a character that was already created by someone else, in this case a character called cloud, whose appearence and fighting style you cannot decide for yourself.

Having stats is an RPG mechanic, and if stats mostly or entirely decide how the main gameplay goes then it is an RPG. Create-a-character isn't required, just a lot of abstraction.

Literally every single video game that has characters is a "role playing game" if you go by word meanings. And potentially no game is a "role playing game" if we go by some random chucklefucks personal arbitrary 500 point list of what qualifies.

A game is an RPG if it has enough genre conventions to get labeled as such in a directory. Keep your autism definitions to yourself
