Yeah this is the thing, MGS2 had what could essentially be seen as small and neat tightly created puzzle boxes of each cell.
It was very sterile. The AI all had tight paths and while the tac team had great AI it was all scripted work.
Solid as fuck, no pun intended.
MGS3 being more open ended areas they needed to tone down the individual soldiers AI simply because there are too many variables that the AI would get confused and just jank out.
It was clear to me from day one when I saw the AI as I was experimented with them that they clearly made the AI less complex because there were more options for the player.
think about MGS2 there were only X amount of lockers you could hide in or X amount of corners you could be in.
In MGS2 there are too many Xs with grass, camo against stuff, under beds, in buildings etc..They had to make the AI retarded and insta know where you are and B line to you or it would be too easy to escape.
Same with MGSV but in V they even removed the radio shit.
Lazily didn't even add soldiers having mics/earphones and saying help when they see you just to not immersion break the alerting of the base.

Shit hitman 2 SA already had a fucking weapon wheel.
Only god tier tech in MGS3 (for the time) is the cutscenes which are still impressive to this day (so are MGS2s) and the foliage and fire system but it was too demanding on the PS2.
Fire and foliage slowed the FPS down to 15 or even sub where in MGS2 I only ever seen FPS dips when using the soldiers in the hold as bowling pins. Which is always fun to do.
No fun shit like that in MGS3 though.
Only 2 fun areas in the entire game, maybe 3.

Also actual real shit I was intending to work towards the VR shit for that trophy last time I played it, only have to complete them all any rank. I did them all gold on PS2 so thought it would be a non issue but the HD collection is broken, specifically the controls of the sniper and I got hard stick on the first sniper VR mission and dropped it there with intention to go back next time I play it.
They get increasingly harder too, the sniper missions I mean. So if I am fucked on the first one its gonna be super hard later on. I am not the only one who has/knows of this issue. the sniping is fucked in the HD remake.
Most of the trophies are just complete it (tanker/plant) X amount of times on all the difficulties and collect dog tags to unlock the bandanna, stealth suits and wigs. Plus gotta do snake tales, which I actually never liked.

No the core systems of MGS are in fact bad.
Camo is complete cancer, obviously why it was superseded with octo camo in the next game.
healing mini game and item weight management as well as stamina is all just fucking padding. There for menu sim bullshit and brings nothing to the player.
Where MGS2 introduced bleeding and that should have carried on in MGS3, getting Injuries just result in a tedious menu sim mini game. (even know some effect the player like weapon sway and stamina loss etc)
then the other core issues, of there being very little stealth in the game and the game mainly being raw traversal (not including cutscenes) on rails sgements and eventually a fucking escort mission...its all cancer, unfun shit.
MGS 1 and 2 were solid stealth games for most of the part, with small on rails/escort parts etc but mainly stealth cells.
MGS3 is mainly you just traversing environments, with little action, barely any stealth and again, lots of on rails and a huge escort section.
I mean fuck you dont even fight a fucking metal gear in the game lmao...

Here is an example. I love dishonored 1 and 2. my last trophy for dishonored (I think) was flesh and steel. Horrible run.
I saved it for last as it was the run I never want to do, but I went out my way to do it as I was on a stint of playing the game back to back and it was best to do it while the game is fresh rather than leaving the worse run for a time when I have forgotten the game.
Now I will play dishored many times again, i have played it shit loads and probably more since getting the plat (plat it on PS3 and 360 I think).

I actually didnt buy a PS4 until MGSTPP was released, well release date announced as I got it for that game, so there is no reason to buy/play it on the PS3.

Yeah I know. I mentioned above the sniping in MGS2 HD collection for VR missions is fucked, Only part that would be hard for me as the main game is easy for me after playing so much and mopping up dog tags is no issue.

Boke section in 3 was actually easy because if you tranq the drivers the bike bails and none of it counts as a kill for you. you can abuse the same shit with barrels, if you hit a barrel and it kills someone it doesnt count as a kill to you.
So it really is just about your aim as, as long as you are hitting them you will survive.
MGS4 bike is super fucking touch because of the auto aim and BS stopping sections that you basically need to know which of the frogs to target in which order.

i dont see exactly how that could work but the major issue is the controller sensitivity is all fucked up.
OG game you would use the Dpad but they fucked up that sensitivity and the L stick was fucked too.
Its enough to get bast the strut L sat on ammo and spamming and enough to snipe vamp but with the sniper missions where you need to be all over the place its not sensitive enough or too sensitive and just cant aim correctly.
It was like something that you couldn't do diagonal movements easy or something like that.

MGS3 is probably my single most hyped game in its original release and one of the only games that actually lived up to my hype for it. threat interactive? he still makes videos, and the ue5 turdies still cry about him. you know what's amazing though? they literally never refute him, not even once. the one guy that knew what he was talking about attacked him in a roundabout way, while still saying retarded shit like "it's ok to target 30 fps and use 1 billion nanite trees". nanite is cool, hypothetically. the point of it is to be able to render huge, polygon dense objects, and cull it in chunks. basically, you take a 100k polygon model, and it's broken up dynamically into a bunch of little clusters of polygons, when when you do something like obscure the model behind a wall, so only 20% of the model is visible, the engine only has to render 20% of the polygons. traditional rendering renders the entire object unless it's 100% obscured, so your options are basically "model on/off". that's what lods are for, the further away you are, the less polygons the model uses. this is nearly a 1 button setup in ue5, it has a very good lod generator. threat interactive's argument was "why not just optimize models to not be 100k polygons instead?" and they had a shit fit. 10 years ago, mgs 5 was hyper optimized in every single way, using every trick possible, trying to never sacrifice speed. snake was something like 20k polygons in total. today, we have characters in the hundreds of thousands. sure, they look better, but not dramatically better. that's one of the primary reasons things run so bad. combine that with mandatory raytracing, which unreal is trying to solve with lumen, but devs even hammer lumen to max settings. did you know lumen is entirely a trick? the reflections are just captures of the scene, rendered as blobs, with tiny polygon counts. developers override this on purpose, so you're practically rendering games twice. for reflections in puddles.

ray tracing is cool, but it's far too expensive for what it is. as a designer, be able to just drop a light into a scene, and it actually affects reflections, and shadows, there's no more work to be done is amazing. the cost is fucking extraordinary. the point of fully dynamic lights is for things like day and night cycles, where if you have baked shadows, as soon as the sun or moon moves, your shadows are fucked. open world games require a bunch of tricks. lights that don't cast shadows is a great one, because you don't need 50 lights casting shadows. another thing we lost is the art of one of the most basic textures; ambient occlusion. the point of this is to make all the places light won't hit dark. ever notice in new games when the lighting is flat and neutral, characters just lose all depth and turn flat? that's because the ambient occlusion map is expecting lights to hit the character from a couple angles. instead, they're not getting hit at all, so you get flat bullshit. we used to bake the ambient occlusion into the color map, so no matter what, there were dark and light spots on characters. it's not dynamic, it 100% messes up hair shadows, so you can't bake hair shadows, but we had screen space occlusion for that, which was good enough.

The original Guy Savage was better. Something about it was much more mysterious. I still don't get what was going on and the enemies being monster wardens with uniforms and the weird grafitti on the indoors environment made me question the lore.

GSΔ just making the monsters vampries and the setting some open air graveyard kills all the mystique. Yes the codec calls were originally talking about vampires but the fact that the original game's nightmare had nothing to do with that created a fascinating narrative dissonance. The minigame was originally a prototype of ZoE3 so if anything the Dracula codec calls had no relevance besides perpetuating Paramedic'e obsession with film randomly, not the sequence itself.
