The industry chose brute force over creativity. Ray tracing is not feasible in real time. What they did, then, is pass a ray tracing iteration only for certain things (shadows, for example), and then let a machine learning algorithm try to guess what the final image should look like. For this to work, you need dedicated GPUs to do this process in parallel, so we are now buying GPUs specialized in doing a shitty job in an attempt to do something that shouldn't be done in the first place.
The result is degraded images that are quite annoying for anyone with standards.
The other way would be to rely on the intelligence of artists to create the illusion of realistic lighting that is feasible for modern hardware. This path never had a chance, however. Maybe in 5 or 10 years, we'll see "indies" trying to offer a purer image experience or something like that, but until then, get used to the astigmatism simulators that are modern games and MShitia "AI" technologies.

Both are brazen lies. It is junk that makes games look minimally better AT BEST compared to what older technologies would allow. But it allows developers to do even less work and with even less competent jeet workforce, while making (you) pay the price. If you actually play the game, the thing that sucks about it all is that any time you move the camera AT ALL the lighting changes and fluctuates on the edges of the screen. It is extremely jarring and annoying. Also the game doesn't have enough "light bounces" or whatever so there are areas that are literally just pitch black even though you're supposed to be able to see there. There's this one mission where you have to jump up and grab onto a vent/ledge area to proceed and I got stuck there for like 10 minutes trying to figure out what the fuck I was supposed to do because with all the RT shit on it was literally just pitch black. And for some reason the game about high tech augmentation does not have night vision or a fucking torch.

I would support us going back to ps2-ps3 level fidelity if it meant we could have better physics interactions in games.
The most advanced fluid dynamics I've encountered and the most realistic feeling real time destruction in videogames were on games that released on the fucking playstation 3 (from dust, hydrophobia, red faction guerrilla). If anything we've been going backwards since then. Everything is about making highly unreactive, uninteractive but very shiny corridors.
If we were at the point of red faction guerrilla on the PS3 then by now we should have games that feature that kind of destruction in real time on the scale of real life cities, tens if not hundreds of square miles.

Not sure how 64 did it, but Sunshine used a technique called camera to texture for its reflections

Game devs already have to manually place lights during things like cutscenes anyway just to get the proper lighting on each character's models. That's not something you can automate without getting a ton of jank. Real life directors need to do this for movie scenes and there exists lighting experts to help them. Being able to use dev tools akin to reshade is kind of the bare minimum

What sucks the most is that games are built with this trash tech, and you can't brute force it to look good like we used to 4 generations of GPUs ago.
So their retarded idea of pushing this trash tech to sell more GPUs is funny. Granted, there are even more retarded people (consumers) who would gobble this slop up.

there are too many objects in cp for there to be shadows on everything, think there may hae been a mod that adds it to every clutter in the game but your fps tanked down to like single digits
