Developers back then were raised off of books which allowed them to develop their imaginations while modern devs are raised off of video games and movies. It's the reason why they can't help but constantly make pop culture references to those said movies as a crutch for being creatively devoid

That's one of the few exceptions that was obnoxious garbage back then because that game's development was a complete disaster and even then that game still tried to do something new. Games now can't shut up about old games and being a "throwback"
