The first four games made by Team Silent are still unmatched in terms of quality and care. Each one of them is beautiful, unique and very rich in lore and references. They are honest works of art which is why they can provide a lot of content to be discussed.

Also that's why Konami's decision to disband Team Silent and outsource the IP to cheap western developers is considered by many to be a war crime against art itself.

The series was actually in trouble even with SH3. The game was originally intended to be a rail shooter. Then they changed plans making it a sequel to the first instead but it was very much rushed. By SH4 it was obvious the series was on a decline even if the game is still good overall. Team Silent just needed more time but these games never would have sold what Konami needed them to sell so really the series itself is ironically suffering just like its themes so strongly suggest.

SH2 by all accounts sold less than SH1, so Konami lost faith in the series. They put a lot of budget into SH2 and a lot of promotion and the game was a dud. Somewhere between 1-2 million sales. If you do the math for the overall series sales throughout the years, it averages like 1.2 million per game which is quite dreadful.

I think they were expecting 3+ million sales and to have a steady RE game.

I like SH2, but man, it's this slow paced atmospheric artistic game and it has a dreadful start for the average gamer. And I think the cover is one of the WORST in mainstream gaming history. Ideally, Boobies should have remade SH3 first and THEN release SH1 as if it were a prequel/sequel with Harry stuck in a loop. Bonus points if a secret ending just shows him sitting down and resting (think of Walter White or K at the end of Blade Runner) which could hint that he somehow knows that he's dead but he also knows that Heather is fine so he doesn't have to keep looking for her anymore. He can finally rest.

SH2 is a big, big game, with a lot of budget behind it. A lot of the reason it probably didn't "hit" with players is that it largely doesn't feel like it. Most of the score is almost hidden away in the game, with low atmopsheric sounds for most of the game. The world is mostly dingy and hard to see. Some of the gameplay (like auto-aim, follow camera) feel kind of dated. Not a lto of enemy variety. it lacks that "wow" factor.

Set pieces are flashy segments meant to be memorable and wow the player. The entire opening segment of SH1 is a set piece for instance. In another instance, the helipad in MGS is a set piece -there is no actual reason the game needs a helicopter other than it's cool and it makes a nice boss fight later on. Someone has to sit down and build these models, record the voice acting, etc.

Set pieces are time intensive. That's why some later games become very streamlined hallways simulators stringing set pieces together with little exploration.

The early segment of SH2 especially is light on set pieces, and doesn't do a lot to wow the player. It's lacking that first alleyway nightmare from Sh1 that wow's the player.

1. First person. - Gives it a new perspective and a reason for it to exist.
2. keeps the dark and flashlights.
