Just being told what is going on is incredibly boring. Good story telling has the reader thinking. That's what makes it interesting.

There is a time and place for slop like Michael Bay Transformers. "Turn your brain off" is a style of storytelling. It's not 'good'. It's for when you don't want to think, or you don't really care about the story. You know that person who keeps asking "what's going on?" when you're watching a show? Those people like being told what is happening. They don't like using their brain when watching TV/movies.
Playing a game like Elden Ring, you have to remember things and use your brain to absorb any story. It's also completely fine ignoring it. It's really a great formula for video game story telling.
I would rather have that style of storytelling than being locked into a cutscene I really don't care about.
Sports is like this, too. You can pay attention to the storylines, or just watch and not care about the story. That's one of the reasons sports are so popular. It's for brains and no-brains alike.

I like DS, but I admit he is right.

Some people like this super 'vague and mysterious' style of writing, including me sometimes, but it gets tiresome after a while. Sometimes, it's better to just be straightforward for once, and stop trying to be 2deep4u all the fucking time.

Because that's a good thing, not every game needs to have a shitty forced in story and dialogue and cutscenes that most players are going to forget about in 4 minutes. The Youtube lore cancer is true but that's not really the game's fault.

I think dark souls success was a bitter pill for story fags to swallow. I still see anons here argue over their fanfiction theories of a game filled with nonsensical messages and item descriptions.

What it really boils down to is, if you capture the autism crowd, they will retroactively and hindsight-justify every single problem in your game and spin it into a positive. That is what happened to Fromsoft games. It literally is a cultish mindset. It took what is essentially a decent game, and turned it into something mythological undeservedly. Shitty aspects suddenly turn into some esoteric design principle that "midwits" simply can't appreciate. Laziness and oversight becomes genius quirks.

Borderlands is dogshit slop but a broken clock is right twice a day. I hate this fag and the company he works for like you wouldn't believe but every modern FromSoft game outside of Bloodborne and Armored Core 6 have dogshit stories that are utterly incomprehensible even AFTER digging around every fucking item in the game to piece together the lore and the actual "story" is usually so barebones the game may as well not even have NPCs if all they do it give the bare minimum.

Pretty much, it's honestly one of the ways you can approach a game story in an excellent way. ~80% of the words written in Souls games have very little relevance to gameplay or what you're doing as the player at all and might as well be lorem ipsum in that regard, but it also never gets in the way of the game itself. Whereas Borderlands has numerous occasions where the way it chooses to tell the story and the writing of the story itself directly detract from the gameplay experience. From's way of fluffing the story manages to avoid pretty much all of that.
