If I were crippled, I think my power fantasy would be having robot legs. Imagine Jax from Mortal Kombat but with metallic legs instead. I'd want to stand, run, and kick people. Reminding me that I'm in a wheelchair with a wheelchair-hero would be depressing.

No because the only reason to "represent" it would be for DEI reasons. Things like flying wheelchairs are retarded, because if you have that level of technology you can simply give the person robot legs to fix their disability. Its double stupid in fantasy games where you have spells that regenerate entire limbs and such

yeah, just give them robotic/magical augmentations that dont look retarded, for example: do NOT give them a dumb magical floating wheel chair, making it so they float or move their legs with magic is much more interesting and believable.
do NOT give them a super mega technological wheelchair that actually does nothing and is only a glorified laptop with wheels, give them an cool exo skeleton, like the ones from advanced warfare.

Just be creative and try to really think how a disabled character might behave in the world you've created and apply the proper penalties to it so it. For example, say you're a crippled Wizard and so you have to spend a lit bit of mana every once in a while to recast a spell of levitation, things like that.

Real answer: duh, yeah, I'm writing an old western story where someone loses a leg from gangrene nearly up to his hip. He's gotta hobble around on a peg and a crutch and it severely impacts his life. Having people who were born disabled isn't "DEI" either, necessarily, obviously. It depends on the story you're telling and why.

This too, if I were in a wheelchair, I'd never want to self-insert as a dude in a wheelchair in a fantasy or sci-fi setting. Though it makes more sense to have wheelchairs in a cyberpunk setting, you could make it so that the player has to constantly pay a subscription fee to keep use of their legs, and if not they're stuck in the chair, if you want to get really sadistic with it. And I would, that's cyberpunk baby.

It seems like an insult just to give a character a magical wheelchair that may as well be the world's most athletic pair of legs because the devs don't want to take the time to factor in how it would actually effect various scenarios, especially when your working with lore that has fuck you magic and nanomachine bullshittery.
Either make their backgrounds make sense, give them a twist, or show how hard it actually is.
