Go look at the list of best-selling authors of all time, and you'll notice that nearly all of them have had their works adapted into numerous movies, shows, games, musicals, toys, etc.
Tolkien is just one among many in that list, and just happens to also be one of the most impactful authors for English fantasy.

Why watch the movies when the books are vastly superior? The movies are a fucking embarrassment. They completely ruined Denethor, they made Frodo into a wimp, and Aragorn was changed for American audiences because having him already be a self-assured leader was just too much for some reason.

Because the books are a difficult read compared to pretty much all other popular fantasy fiction. LOTR is full of long poetic descriptions and narration, has several actual songs written into it that people have to read without knowing how the tune should go, and lacks the action-packed combat that most people are used to reading in those kinds of books. The movies are completely different in that respect, and a shorter time commitment. That's why people watch them if they weren't fans before. And fans slurp that stuff up because they will either hate-watch it or gush over getting a movie of their favorite thing made.

Demons are real and they're doing their best to destroy everything good in this world through other people. LotR was one of the most famous and well receive pieces of media created by a staunch Catholic and Christian man, with lots of themes about hope, determination and many other things that stem out of Christian doctrine.

Demons do not want that to be something people consume. They want constant misery porn made to demoralize others and lead them to either suicide or a life lived away from God, just rotting away or doing things to harm themselves for the demons own pleasure and enjoyment. But don't fret. Eventually, there will be someone who swoops in and creates something great like this again despite all odds and remind everyone that despite the darkness they find themselves in, there is still a candle lit there somewhere.
