people are openly calling tekken 8 a dead game due to the changes made. if it were a simple refresh then tekken would have been dead after 4. mk1 got a lot of hate for its kameo system and ignoring of previous characters. they all have their ups and downs but none of them are simple refreshes of previous games. to compare them to fifa is wild as shit

I don't think MK was ever taken seriously as a fighting game, mostly because it's made by westerners who aren't nearly as autistic about the technicalities of fighting games as the jap fighting games
I'm pretty sure Skullgirls is the most successful (outside of the casual audience) western fighting game there has been and even that paled in comparison to the regular japanese games

nobody's favorite is T8, MK1, or SF6.
I think modern Tekken peaked a bit with 7, I tried 8 and didn't like how many particles were on screen nor did I like "heat" or whatever as a mechanic. Haven't played since they "ruined" it but It was always fundamentally an uninspired entry
I bought Mortal Kombat 1. It has a nice campaign for a fighting game, but unlocking alt colors and stuff on the ladders was very grindy when it really didn't have to be. Whale-bait mobilegame microtransaction slop that wastes the time of the 99% of players that just want to play the game they already paid for. gameplyawise I was hoping for MKX but i got MK11's problems instead. Assists were bizarre. Artstyle was corpo woke and devoid of passion or grit.
street fighter 6 is ok I think I like it better than 4 and 5, I just don't care for street fighter.

Super SF2 flopping and MK nailing 3 games in a row with record sales doomed this genre because it gave the impression that fighting games werent about skill based 1v1 action but rather about making the most retarded game possible with press X to awesome buttons and having le fancy grafix to sell it to people who on average just buy a console for sports games.
Every single SF after 2 tries to continously introduce more retarded comeback mechanics and fancy cinematic supers becuase they focus less on the game feeling good to play and more on the game *looking good* to play, and the apex of it all is this current crop of FGs we have were defense is severely damaged in favor of having heavy offensive mechanics and system mechanics tailored towards letting anyone kill you for doing so much as whiffing a move at the wrong time, teching a grab, or jumping.

Kills me that this managed to infest every single mother fucking fighting game series even when it makes no sense at all and fucks up the pacing or worse, the balance. I thought it was cool when it came to street fighter but in hindsight it was the beginning of the cancer.
