It's a genuinely good game, setting aside the obvious things that makes /v/ seethe (Ubisoft title, black people).
Naoe is a cute and enjoyable protagonist, and the story is overall decent. The gameplay is tight and refined, and has been improved over several free updates. Visually, the game is gorgeous. The game is simply good, regardless of /v/'s unjustified hate.

I think you're underselling the impact. It was ubisoft's break glass in case of emergency game. The press backed it heavily. The level of failure was so severe that Ubisoft didn't get nearly as much from it's emergency IP sale to Tencent as it wanted. Only about one and a half AAA cycles.

even if it HAD sold 5 million copies at full price, even if they were announcing 5 million SALES instead of players, that'd still only be 350 million dollars, from which platforms would deduct their 30% or so cuts, among other stocking and distribution fees. it's no more a financial success than fantastic four is for marvel.

News flash, they're not spending that money productively, they're mostly just running an administrative dog and pony show while skimming money off the top and committing fraud and theft to make up the difference. Mass wage theft is not uncommon in this industry, small things like that add up when you have thousands of employees "working" for years to make a product. Creative accounting is another thing since they outright create fake companies to loan money from and then pay them back, marking down the interest they pay themselves as a loss.
They don't care about the money coming in through sales, they care about shares and government grants that are funding their large scale fraud. Denuvo almost exclusively exists to prevent thirdies from spoiling their release narrative, which is when most people they care about pay attention to the game.
