Corporations and massive profits happened.
Small talented team with a vision will beat majority of big studio games.
Many retro games were made by smaller talented studios even if owned by corporations.
Bigger teams and bigger budgets mean that suits go crazy to minimize risks.
The result is often slop.

The original run for Shovel Knight was considered for GoTY back in 2014, although indies weren’t nearly as proven and has gained a considerable growth since. It’s not impossible for Silksong to win, but they’re have no money to bribe people.

and what else has even been released this year? the triple A industry takes a decade to make each game and even when something eventually comes out, it's generic focus-tested slop. They've basically abdicated from the position of making even half-decent games anymore.

I enjoyed Hades 1 and went into rogue likes a few years ago but realised that I didn't exactly like them especially if they are 2D. Played Hollow knight a couple of hours but didn't get into it. Should I give them another try?
