in japan, lawyers (the defense) can't do the job of the detectives... the investigative part is on the police and prosecutors entirely, at best all you can do is gather info from outside that can help the investigation and your client directly
since AA is based in the japan law system with some US in the mix...
the police force is on the side of prosecutors (as in, not allowing the defense to look for evidence in the crime scene until late, or if at all in some cases unless you have some kind of permit)
he has to do it not because he can, but because he HAS to or else he can't defend his clients, AND because he can't pay any sort of private detective, otherwise, all of his cases would probably end up in guilty veredicts with many innocent people in prison if we were realistic
the fact that every case is solved with you barely winning IS because you did what would've been impossible without proper investigation (which remains on the prosecutor's side)

i believe there was a case where you get to a key witness that the prosecutor had yet to reach, and when they do, they claim them as police protected, snatching and preventing you from further questioning
