One underappreciated thing about Fromsofts souls-games is how they aren't afraid to add silly enemies or NPCs to their games. The oppressive atmosphere of these games wouldn't be the same without dumb monsters like Wheel Skeletons. It gets even better when they kill you.

Another example is the Vanguard. That's the first boss in Demon's Souls. It's such a silly design if you take a closer look, yet the first death for most players.
If something this dumb looking can kill you, what does it say about the rest of the world?

Pumpkin heads are a little silly, but the Snake Men are to go Further Beyond

wheel skeletons can go fuck themselves and so can the bloated hollows in the Painted World. now that I'm thinking of it all of the Painted World's "peaceful and kind" population can go fuck itself
oh and fuck the squid guards in the Tower of Latria too

I've had a similar opinion about Majora's Mask. People laud that game for being so dark and serious, but just being dark is not strictly the appeal. The part that draws me in is how strange and uncanny it is.

Fromsoft has lost their touch, dare I say, their soul

What precisely makes wheel skeletons any more "dumb" or "silly" than any other walking set of bones? The idea that a pile of bones would work together as a single entity without any of the other stuff is in itself pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

Japs are masters at tonal inconsistency without it being bad. Ex. Metal Gear in general, Puck in Berserk. Westerners just can't do it

Sad how western devs looked at that and thought it looked too silly for the setting & remade it to look more "badass".

God I hate Bluepoint so fucking much.

A regular animate skeleton makes you ask "okay but how?"
Dark Souls' wheel skeleton makes you ask "why?"

*irony poisoned millenials
Comic books and pulp fiction were pretty silly while also playing it straight. Modem writers are too insecure to adapt them.

If you ignore that human will is made of a net of neurons working off chemical reactions and stimuli side by side with neurotrasmitters and instead attribute it to the concept of "soul" then it's very easy to justify skeletons

They took some inspiration from Berserk, which in turn took some inspiration from Evil Dead. I wonder how far it goes.
