Not like we're going to have an actual, serious discussion here, but 2000s Chinese devs pulled graphics and style on par with non-Chinese devs, though with a time lag. Historical fiction, magic, martial arts post-apocalypse, whatever. The biggest issue that eventually sank the emerging market was piracy, as people didn't really have the means to distribute all that via licensing and pirates just overwhelmed the whole thing, leaving a gaping hole up until indie markets took place as a profitable force internationally and Steam became a go-to place for buying games that was actually more convenient than going to the piracy site and keeping up with the updates and searching for new games.
So what you'd have there is that the new generation of Chinese indies was raised on either MMOs, games that were popular in early 2010s or the biggest non-Chinese thing at that time. Sort of like how after the 2008 financial crisis Russia's gamedev industry collapsed and the modern indies made there look almost indistinguishable from their international counterparts. There's also the problem that Chinese games *do* look like shit at times because they a lot of them a proper artstyle and everything looks like mud, but they'll figure that out eventually.
You don't see the new things because of three reasons, basically. First, wuxia and anime *is* popular in China, so it makes sense that what people like is popular. Second, there's the language barrier: there are plenty of FMVs, quests, puzzles and RPGmaker things out there, but there's no way to gauge that these things would be popular in the West, so translations are left to the dev to decide. Third, (you) aren't searching for them. For example, there's Murders on Yangtze River, "an Ace Attorney-like detective game that takes you on a journey through early 20th century China". How many people in the West would actually be interested in interwar China aside from me to warrant and English patch?

Like, there's this game called Bloody Spell. It's a fun character action type of thing with a lot of soul in it along with cumbait DLCs and even workshop support for skins and weapons and all, but it looks like this all the time. There's basically nothing pretty about it aside from all the half-naked ladies, not that i'm complaining about that, so even though I liked it a lot, someone may instantly dismiss it as slop because it looks like it and I can't complain about that.

Amazing Cultivation Simulator is still the only game that captures the fever dream that is the cultivation genre so they get some things right.

I will never understand the retards that tout how "serious and realistic" they are and then never look up the fact that middle ages peoples LOVED colors. There was no such THING as unpainted, shiny metal armor, because it would fucking RUST. If you were poor you painted your armor with charcoal-based black paint, and if you were rich, you used purple or blue paints utilizing dyes imported from the middle east. Marble statues were covered head to toe in paint. People regularly painted their houses and loved art. Everything being dirty may be true, but it was also vibrant and lively, not brown and dull.
