I asked in an earlier thread how to zoom in and I can't figure out a way to do it in the config.txt file. Would love a way to get that done so I can see.

Also do I need custom GX and what does it actually do?

Don't use guns until the lategame. Ammo is very scarce.
Farmer and Pianist are deceptively powerful classes. I would consider trying them out for a second or third playthrough.

What skill for a warrior?

anyway, I can't really help you OP since I'm very new to the game myself, only got my character to level 17 so far

the recommended version of elona is custom gx as other anon said, I play that one and it seems good so far

at the beginning it's kind of overwhelming and hard as fuck, I keep dying while trying to clear a required lesimas floor, there are shitton of items in this game and I already exhausted the storage limit in my starting cave, still have very little idea of what things are actually worth hoarding

Fuck, I haven't played it in a decade, and last time I kept up with it it was getting casualized.
Your first priority early game is food. "e"at from floor in towns, that doesn't count as stealing. "b"ash tangerine trees and gather nuts in wilds to have some food stock.
Then do quests from town boards, don't take quests like performer or farmer without skills. Early hunts you should be able to manage if you let your pet do the work. Use platinum to get skills, weighlifting, gardening etc., look up where trainers are on wiki. And try to keep your skill potentials above 100. Sleep on the best bed you see around to get stat potentials.

+ has a lot of extra mod content and completely different pacing. If you're not interested in Ano's fanfic, Elin's mostly just a refined Elona that adds some new things, misses some old things (unless they've been readded since January), and has a different story if you care about that.

comparatively, Elin doesn't drop items and I think has lessened stat loss

The good thing is that it is a roguelike (TRUE roguelike) without permadeath.
The bad thing is that it is sort of boring and very grindy. The loot you find is not too great either.
Also the early game is hard as nails and will kick your butt which can be good or bad depending on your preferences. It gets easier over time though.
You can play as a pile of rocks and fuck a dog in this game.
