Why id gamedev the only thing you can't rawdog?
Have no formal training in art but you can pick up a paintbrush and smear paint till you learn, have no formal training in music but you can strum a guitar or sing like shit till you learn, have no formal training in cooking but just mix ingredients that taste good till you learn
Why is coding the only thing you can't pull out your ass by sitting in front of a computer and just fiddling with the code?

Project management is the biggest meme invented by managers to harass their supervisors to harass their employees. I got a management position at my software development job and half of my job is sitting in meetings with people with 0 clue asking if we're hitting our "targets".

You 100% need project management, otherwise it becomes a spiralling disaster where no one knows wtf what they are actually doing.

But most “project management” systems and overviews are fully performative, and the actual management that needs to be done is done informally and not part of the offical systems.

I'd like to know what kind of companies you guys work at that you're so allergic to Jira. I'm a software engineer in B2B software, I'm not gonna talk to hundreds of customers to collate all their requirements and shit, that's what consultants are for. And I'm certainly also not gonna keep track of hundreds of bug tickets manually

Anonymous No.718762406
Jira fucking sucks. The goobers I work for have one Jira server configured one way due to customer limitations, and another configured another way due to other customer limitations, but the teams work on both projects, so we have to juggle TWO boards. And because bugs created on one need to be viewable by people on the other with only access to one, we have to duplicate all tickets. It's absolutely gay. I just want to write code. Thank you for reading my anonymous annual review.

Honestly this.
Team Cherry is quite a small and tight-knit team, so they don't raelly need to track how things are going, because everyone knows their systems very very well and they likely trust each other to get shit done and get it done well.
Project management is when you add lots of people to your team and you can't keep track of what everyone is doing.
Jira and project management tools can be extremely helpful, but all too often they're bastardised by actually retarded middle management who literally do nothing but harrass the team and peer over your shoulder like adult daycare instead of being an asset to the team.
Then it gets further bastardised into a KPI and you learn to hate it.
>>718760608
For real. Most "Project Management" is cushy boomer jobs that they get all worked up justifying their existence by harassing the team with bullshit Having a simple list of tasks that you've got to get done to not step on each others' toes figuratively is important. Sitting around assigning meaningless points or estimates to shit is pointless busy work to make retards feel important.

Why not just add a few tags and then encourage other teams to tag their/your tickets as they come across them or spend an hour or so assigning all the tickets you want to pick up for the week/month whatever and then just filter all their nonsense away?

My grandma has a smartphone and she can use whatsapp and email perfectly, but doesn't get a lot of other shit on it. I visit them once or twice a week and she always has to ask me how to do stuff or things that need fixing. She always feels bad "I finish work, then come here and have to do more work" and I've had limited success trying to explain the difference between software engineering and clicking a few buttons to fix settings she's accidentally changed.
It's fun showing boomers and silent gens simple shit like voice assistants or satellite maps.
My grandpa also tells me about when jeets call their house and he either calls them something racist or just hangs up on them.
He's South African and has an opinion on anyone not white.

I think jira can actually be fine. At my work, one of our guys is in another country, so our stand ups are over slack huddle. I tune the fuck right out and either keep working or do my daily quizzes, give my update and then tune out again.
I just head to our releases, find the most current one, pick a ticket and work on it and rinse and repeat.
If it were up to me, I'd probably cancel stand up.

Literally a pointless job that could be done by 1 guy taking 10 - 15 minutes out of their day to do. It always turns into "team harasser" where they just come around and ask "how's this ticket doing?" "how much longer to get everythign ready for release?"
Shorter without you breathing down my neck, now fuck off back to your coffee and newspaper.

>>718760608

These anons are correct.

I'm a project manager and scrum master in AAA dev and have worked on AA/A/indie projects. Someone in that role becomes necessary when your team gets above a dozen or so people because humans are inherently disorganized and will content themselves with working in their preferred silos (art/programming/audio) and not step out unless they have to. They need to be tard wrangled.

A good PM will keep everyone and the project on track without wasting everyone's time in pointless bureaucratic bullshit like needless meetings, email rituals, and all that. A good PM is the invisible hand.

Conversely, a shitty PM is the micromanging idiot that needs emails and double confirmations and endless meetings to feel self important. I can never blame anyone who has to suffer one of those types and then turns around to say 'project managers are shit.'
Anonymous No.718771625
I'm an overpaid middle manager that runs a couple of security architecture / engineering teams. We use azure devops for light pm stuff. It's fairly straight forward. We just document everyone's initiatives and which overall thing they serve and once a week everyone gets together to discuss updates and shoot the shit. The trick to management / pm is to provide enough scaffolding to clarify work / priority and then not be a huge fucking faggot.
