After some real world lessons (read up on CIH virus also known as Chernobyl) manufacturers came up with double BIOS setups where one was on a ROM, impossible to be thrashed and ready to be used as a spare if you fuck up the BIOS update in some way or get trashed by viruses again.
Later a cheaper version was implemented where you didn't get a whole replacement Bios just a ROM loader that could be run in case of some catastrophic update failure.

Your CPU, GPU, mobo, storage, etc. have all had serial numbers burned into them that any hardware can check for the last 25 years, it's how HWID bans work. TPM is actually less effective as an identifier because you can buy a new one for $10 as opposed to hundreds for a new CPU.

Unless you mean basic shit like changing some options around, of course I'm afraid of tinkering with my bios.
At best, I can do nothing because the manufacturers have done their jobs. At worst, I'll brick my machine.
>>718769356
>manually install the wrong bios
Usually not possible unless the manufacturer is fatally retarded. If you distribute a bios that doesn't check if an update is signed and actually suitable for it, you should be shot.
Unless by manually installing you mean disabling boot guard (I think that's what it was called?) and actually flashing it yourself instead of using the bios update process, but then you deserve what you get.
>power outage
Also usually not a problem. Intel has come a long way, and the process should be idiot proof by now. I wouldn't try it for no reason, but I've had a machine rebootet right in the critical moment, and it managed to recover on its own.

If you need new features/hardware support you update. If you run into some specific issue or if there's some catastrophically bad bug, you also update. Else I don't have the updooter mentality for anything, especially not hardware. If it works and is stable, there's no need to bother with constant firmware updates. Only exception is something that is directly exposed to the internet like a router.

This was nothing but fear mongering from tech illiterates. Manufacturers encourage BIOS updates for bug fixes and better memory compatibility. Most modern motherboards support flashing signed BIOS images without even entering the BIOS so you can recover even if you softbrick it. In the distant past hardbricking was possible but still rare and there were other safeguards against it.

If your cpu is giving you issues now then they're only to get worse with time and a BIOs update won't fix anything since it's the chip itself that's degrading. I say risk the BIOS update now then warranty the CPU so you at least have a setup that should last a while. Best to do it while everything is under warranty so you don't get left holding the bag with a dead cpu or mobo. On my MSI mobo the process is super simple, just put the new bios file on a usb drive, load into the bios and reboot into flash mode, then select the new BIOS from the menu and it'll take it from there. Impossible to fuck up if you can follow basic instructions.

in the 90s and earlier bios update failures were relatively more frequent than they are now so that was relevant advice (although it still wasn't common to have issues). these days, they have enough safeguards that you could run thousands of them and not run into a problem. you may have continued to hear that advice into the 2000s due to momentum but honestly it was very safe even by like the mid to late 2000s.

the reverse case of an update fixing something like that is much more common than your case, though what you mentioned does happen.

they also sometimes add optimizations that can make your system more stable. for instance, it's pretty common for higher-end motherboard manufacturers to try to redline everything for bigger number on benchmarks when they first launch, then they find out those configs aren't stable and tweak them just enough to put them back into the stable realm. the performance difference for something like this is usually fractions of a percent but you gain a lot more stability as a result.

That's the plan, only I've been putting off going through with it is all. I checked my CPU, it's under warranty till 2028 at the very least, I checked.
As for the MB? I also have MSI, a MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI (MS-7E07) to be exact. If it's the same process for that as whatever you have, than the only real concern I have is my power going out randomly. I'll probably do it in the next few weeks, I've been busy with some personal shit. Gotta test my old PC too. It was working last I checked, but it's monitor died, and I've yet to test the one my crrrent PC is using on it. I tested it with an old shitty TV, but that was for HDMI, not DP, and I'm concerned it may have taken out the port for my old PC when the monitor died. KInda spooked I plug my new monitor in, and it gets fried, even if it seems silly.
