If you don’t think Majora’s Mask is the peak of video games as an art form you are sorely mistaken. Sure games like Disco Elysium have more complexity but even that game doesn’t have the same level of pure dread and existentialism. Majora is basically the equivalent of Picasso’s Guernica in game form and honestly surpasses it.

Majora's Mask is vastly overrated and overglazed by its fans. You have to be a coddled child to find its presentation deep. Is it cool is it compelling? Sure, but it's also really simple and hasty and pegging trying slightly than not at all with the presentation as PEAK ART is silly to the extreme.
As a game it's also padded as fuck and shares a lot of jank with Ocarina... arguably having more jank, frankly. The bosses suck and the ocarina is overused to the point of annoyance. You can wake me up at night and my fingers could play the Elegy of Emptiness on your balls.

Anyway it's alright. Too many clocks.

The only time I really feel alive is when I know death is coming for everything I have and everything I am. All things lead to dust, and no matter how attached we are to things and people, they all end up in the same place. Stare into death's crater-filled face, into that void, and live free my friends. Find some comfort in that permanence and know the consequences of your attachments. We all live in Clock Town but almost none of us perceive the moon descending right above us. Time is running out.

Majora's mask contains a lot of things directly from the developers' lives during that time. They didn't get a chance to clean things up and just shipped it while still having it be a quality Zelda title even if it was rather short in comparison to OOT. It pairs amazingly well with OOT. OOT being a coming of age story, and MM being a story of emotional maturity, both of which are timeless and compelling storylines. There is a reason people wanted a third hero of time game, but I feel that the two we got tied up his journey rather well and gave him a nice send off, he works through things and keeps moving on to the next adventure, even in death.

Video games being a form of "art" is the dumbest meme that's plagued this medium and if your game only has "muh art" going for it then it probably feels like shit to play and has nothing going for it which yeah, that describes MM perfectly. The phrase you're looking for is "bald faced lie".
MM feels fucking incredible compared to OOT. Packing "item" functions into the transformation masks so a small related set of them can be used in a snappy manner feels better than literally every tool other than your sword being on a C button. Each major area being a mechanical puzzle to solve to get to the dungeon, rather than trying to navigate to a clearly visible entrance that you could reach with a small difference to your movement, feels more interesting. Cycle 1 is a more natural tutorial than Kokiri Forest was, but neither is perfect, I'll admit.

First of all, Zora can also use hookshot.
Secondly, I'm not claiming that at all, I'm saying that because it's a function baked into a transformation, it is more easily accessed and snappier to use than the hookshot is in either game. And I haven't even brought up the other items it replaces. Do you prefer opening the menu to switch into or out of the iron boots over pressing one button to switch between swimming and sinking? Does that feel better to you?

Video games are art. Games in and of themselves aren't mere diversions, otherwise we as human beings would never test our mettle against one another in sport. No, video games aren't akin to Olympian competition, however they are a facsimile of that. A challenge is a challenge is a challenge, unless you want to assert that your grandma, who has never touched a video game in her life, can effectively compete at EVO or some other tournament, or even undertake the task of completing Dark Souls. She couldn't, not without first acclimating to the demands of the game, as would be expected of actual sports or art forms such as ballet. End of story.

Besides, because "art" is such a loose and free form concept, practically anything could be considered art. Art is in the eye of the beholder, and you can't just invalidate someone's perspective. Majora's Mask in particular is very a emotionally charged and touching game, which uses its dark atmosphere to address very adult topics, some of which include life, death, coping with loss, love, longing for acceptance in a cruel world, and other such themes. There is value in that. End of story.

Ammunition, not equipment. You never lose anything as long as you've already bought it. Some things, like the powder keg, may have additional requirements, but by and large you hold on to everything as soon as you get it.
>I sure love having to restart a quest after the day changes!
Quests aren't that long and you can skip time with the Song of Double Time to advance them at your leisure.
>I sure love having a time limit for a series known for exploration!
You can slow down time. A standard 3 day cycle is one hour, but with the Inverted Song of Time, this can be extended to two. Furthermore, the world is rather intimate, so it doesn't require a lot of time to explore. Furthermore, you can continue exploration where you left off at the start of a 3 day cycle, provided that you have the correct items that give you access to whatever region you were in.
>I sure love having to use a guide to find all the useless masks!
If you needed to use a guide, you might be a few korok seeds short of a new slot upgrade if you know what I mean.
>I sure love having only 4 shitty dungeons
You mean 4 good dungeons and the mini dungeon that is the moon.
>I love standing around waiting for time to pass in the evening because I have nothing better to do while I wait for an NPC to catch up on their schedule
See above; you can skip time, but even if you don't, at worst you're waiting for a period of 3 to 5 minutes, because one real world minute is an hour in game.

You can skip time. It's only an hour. All you do is wait until after she's received his letter to inquire about him by talking to her with his mask equipped; Then, you meet her in the Stock Pot Inn kitchen at 11pm where she asks you to deliver a response. You send the response and the door to his space behind the pawn shop will be open, and you can speak with him; He tells you that he won't see her again until he gets his bridal mask back from a thief, but then he asks you to deliver his amulet. You go and give her the amulet, and she vows to wait for him. Then, you help him defeat the thief and retrieve his mask.

You can do all of these things in between dungeon crawling or other tasks. You can use a song to soar to the entrance of each dungeon, and then use the same song to teleport back to town. It's simple shit.

This is definitely a problem I have with the game, though it is also one of my favorite games ever made.

I think it could have been fixed by just cutting the retarded Stray Fairy mechanic and instead implementing those rewards as questline rewards.

Strictly speaking though, the real quest reward is the Fierce Deity Mask and all the masks required to obtain it. The random heart pieces you get for doing something piss easy with said masks are just bonuses for the observant. Things like OoT's scattered capacity upgrades and other small upgrades in the pool would have done wonders too. The Rock Sirloin into Don Gero sidequest could have given you infinite fastroll as Goron, or the Deku Playground could have rewarded you with a longer hover time, etc.

Lots of sadly missed opportunities to do something more interesting in that game. I wish the remake would have done stuff like this instead of make the game blow dick.

there are 24 masks and you need to get all of them to complete the file, it's up to you if you choose to do that or not

why is it bad if a sidequest takes up the whole cycle? i think it's cool that the game gives the player an entirely different way to play through the three days that isn't combat- or dungeon-oriented at all.

what makes it even better is most players wont ever get to see it. that's what makes these games good, you have to go out of your way to find cool shit.

There are minor and major side quests. Of course the simpler side quests are going to ask you to do something simple, as would be the case in any other game. In the Witcher 3, you have story heavy side content that is quite involved and has nothing to do with the plot, and then you have mmo tier fetch quests that having you killing random mobs and collecting their drops. It's nothing new. At least in Majora's Mask, you get side quests that vary between simple and slightly more complex, and at least the rewards vary in importance and value as well. You could consider the whole post Snowpeak Goron races as a side quest to acquire the best weapon in the game. You could consider helping the girls at Romani Ranch a side quest to get Epona alongside a few masks.

It doesn't. No matter how you want to play MM you have to clear all 4 dungeons to beat the game and get through the 3 day cycle. The 3 day cycle is just a time limit set on how long you have to run around until you have to reset the schedules of everyone.

>journal
literally had a thread today complaining about how you couldn't figure out the anju quest on your own, literally today i pointed out that the journal can help you deduce what you're missing.

so sometimes, the journal is a good feature cause it helps you find things you missed, but other times it's a bad feature because it... helps you find things you missed

Most quests in the game don’t do this and even for the ones that do you can just plan your day to get stuff done efficiently

Again, just apply some basic time management skills and you can easily fit exploration into your schedule or just do it while waiting for an event to happen

The time management system is a great idea because it makes every decision the player makes meaningful for that cycle

Horseshit. Just because there's a quest log of sorts doesn't mean it was sidequests: the game. You know what you have to do to beat the game? Four dungeons. You know what you don't have to do? Kafei's quest. And Kafei's quest that entangles majority of the Clock Town is literally the only thing that's sorta kinda different from overwhelming majority of so-called sidequests, which are numerous, yes, but almost all of them amount to a linear get a "key" X to unlock Y which is how every other Zelda game works as well. Sometimes you have to be at a certain time point but it's just playtime padding and doesn't make it any deeper than "You need Saria's Song to get a Piece of Heart from the Skull Kid" in OoT
