So, Karl... What is your thoughts on him /v/? Is he actually just a retard or is he the archetypal wise fool? Sometimes he says things that feel some how right, but its coming out of his mouth so it sounds retarded. Certainly has a unique way of looking at the world or he very well could just be an act and I am the retard.

He has wisdom, he isn't afraid of thinking for himself and speaking his mind, he just isn't able to put his thoughts into words in a way that Ricky and Steve can always understand. It's funny how he would talk like an old man on the radio show when he was only in his late 20s.
XFM Karl was real Karl, but I think he got an idea of why people like him after the first season or two and started playing into it after that to an extent. The podcast had a lot of repeated bits from the radio show.

If you listen to the radio show from the beginning it's pretty clear that he's genuinely kinda dim and unworldly, but the stone-faced "not in on the joke" persona is an act. In the earliest episodes he's still weird but a lot more engaged and self-aware, laughing at his own mistakes and whatnot. Then at some point Ricky went too far and he considered quitting, at which point they had some behind the scenes discussions that apparently involved formally hammering out his role in the trio, at which point his persona abruptly shifted.
