Long waits make you forget how bad or good the original game actually was and the vocal ones in the community are always the diehard fans obsessing over it so your current opinion on the game and the sequel's expected quality ends up becoming disorted. It really is the best move for medicore yet popular games. Hollow Knight's a great game but to expect the sequel to even come near it in terms of quality without it feeling like a soulless duplicate is a bit ridiculous, it'll be like Hades 2 all over again.

Deltarune didn't ghost its audience. Tobyfox constantly shat out updates on the progress of the game. He just didn't give out release dates.

Only reason to have that is if your game is in early access. Outside that there is no reason to keep constant watch on a game.
Early access games require constant updates due to the game not being finished but also being available to buy. People have given you money for an eventual finished product. You are actually required to keep them updated and fully release the product.
Telling someone you are making a game and then never saying shit about it until it is complete isn't the same as handing someone a game for money and then never saying shit about until "maybe" it's complete.
