A. Mr. Game&Watch route. Just have it be a 2-d plane character. Givbes them a unique style.
B. Just extrapolate the design to 3D. The whole yarn aesthetic was due to a curse made by Yin-Yarn, pretty much everything he had in his yarn world was previously 3d/real.
So for Squashini you just give him a magician's hat with a rose stuck in the grim. A pumpkin/guord head. Bow tie. Cape. tuxedo. Then gloves or whatever for disembodied hands, ray-man style.
Then toss on a yarn/felt texture

It's really not that hard.

I wanted to showcase the recolors other characters had and showcase what they are referencing. The only ones I couldn't pinpoint a reference to were Knuckle Joe's and Cappy's. I didn't bother doing this with Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight because since they're recolors are taken from Smash Ultimate, their references are the same (with the exception of Air Riders having a purple Kirby, which is based on Ninja Kirby's appearance in Kirby Super Star and purple was one of the colors you can choose in the original Air Ride).
