Why did people "love it" (and then immediately abandoned it) on release so bad?

Console players don't know any better. They don't have easy access to the OG Oblivion and they won't have future access to Skyblivion in a handful of months so their only choice is to play the ugly UE5 slop demaster, at which point they might as well defend it because otherwise they'd have to admit they've been served outsourced garbage and can't do anything about it.

the thing that gets me is that screen space reflections AND raytracing are both enabled, which causes ugly messy effects like weapons reflecting across the entire lake surface. Did they even playtest? its literally the same bug that enb solved years ago.

They didn't... Most devs just ship the default UE5 config files and leave them be. This is why every game is so bad. They could solve lot of issues just by making different profiles for separate vram configurations for example but they can't be bothered to do even that.
