Here's my normie take as someone who occasionally plays fighting games

The reason mortal kombat is shit is because they wont take the games back to what made them distinct in the first place. The unique fighting mechanics are nowhere to be seen, and the few that are new are mostly lackluster and boring. The art has aproached more of the "Corporate and clean" without ethos kind of aesthetic, while mortal kombat originally and in the 3D era was based around a blend of tense and deadly battle in the middle of a contemporary backdrop (Be it rock, or ritual/cult like music, they all had this sort of dark and tense twist to it. Like lives were at stake. They were context dependent to the mortality of kombat and the cruel dangerous world around them). It was reflected from the stages to the music, the clothing, etc. They were also capable of being funny without being pretentious, like the humor was *valid* in the sense that they were genuine, or made it very clear that it was a joke (like in the case of friendships, or in visual gags like those of MK2/3.) and non canon. They also decided to warp the identities of many of the fighters for the sake of making a political statement, either softening them up (Like scorpion and sub zero becoming allies instead of bitter enemies) or by stripping pun intended them of their "problematic" characteristics (Mileena and girls in general, Stryker, and im fairly sure Johnny to some extent).

In general, if they dont have the balls to do something whats considered "wrong" nowadays, and to give that appealing sense of "Mortal Kombat", then its just gonna be clean garbage like MK1. Gore doesnt make up for it, its really just blood without the right context and aesthethic.

The constant use of time traveling is also extremely overused and tiring at this point. If you can just change the timeline anyways, why does anything matter? It gives no weight to the combat, just go to kronika or whatever holds the sands of time and restart the timeline. Problem solved. It inherently takes weight away from the tension if your actions dont have any danger to it, since you know the character will just come back to the next timeline reset.

i think mk11 would've been the perfect final mk game exactly because they managed to deescalate the conflicts between a lot of the characters. the sequence where raiden realizes he and liu kang are about to go full retard again was cool and satisfying imo. liu kang becoming a god was cool too. but making mk1 a few years afterwards and reopening all those plotlines again was just stupid and honestly quite depressing to me
