I actually don't think 2D sonic is very fun to play. The levels aren't very satisfying to get good at, unlike say, some of the tech you can do in DKC with chaining rolls together and stuff, and the minigame/emerald collection stuff seems at odds with a platformer where you move at 200mph. Spark the Electric Jester 3 is the best Sonic game.

I'd say it's better than 3K. 3K is the best of the classics, but that comes down to it being just consistently "good" while 1 is basically a proof of concept and 2/CD are "great half the time and rancid dogshit the other half" honestly? if we ranked 3 and K standalone I'd say &Knuckles is the best sonic game on the genesis

these are the only great entries.
I love other entries, CD and R are a vibe. The original and Heroes and Advance 3 have their moments.

I don't see a point in splitting hairs over how mid Superstars and Frontiers are. "my mid is better than your mid!!" Just enjoy them or don't. arguing mid is completely subjective. Nobody alive thinks Frontiers or Superstars are peak. Mania is in the running and in the conversation though. That makes some of you seethe for some reason. Or i'm being trolled.

fuckin fair point. Mania is still "pick up and playable" in a way that a greatest hits album is. 3+K is like a band's 2 disc magnum opus. Its more daunting. 2 is my favorite.
