Some of them just aren't interesting looking. One thing people tend to overlook is that these are more than just design changes. A lot of times a mega will get a new ability and a complete overhaul in how it plays. Mega mawhile isn't particularly well designed, but it's a legitimate monster in battle.

Maybe. Gen IV is Masuda's baby and the true beginning of "nuPokemon", with Gen III being the transition point between classic Pokémon and nuMon so all boomers recognise Gen IV as the ultimate SLOP gen. I think this is the first game where Masuda isn't actually in charge (in a macro sense) with Masuda leaving TPC in 2022.
