The later levels have a lot more stuff in them, and a lot more platforming. The first level is just a linear rollercoaster style arrangement to help new players get acclimated and it's arranged in an open format so it can be blown through quickly in a speedrun instead of strictly being a slow tutorial in an enclosed hallway that you have to sit through every time.

Even if you're not strictly speedrunning the game, and you're just on another playthrough after you're familiar with the controls, that saves a lot of tedium, without just making the first level entirely skippable.

It doesn't make for the best first showing, but it makes a surprising amount of sense in context and it shows they planned in a high level of replayability.
