Kojima was the main writer and designer and director of every game, the original creator and mastermind of the franchise. Hours of behind the scenes footage and countless interviews exist demonstrating how much work he does in all his games. Few other video game series are as closely associated with one person. It's delusional to suggest otherwise, pure contrarian hatred drives this narrative.

I wouldn't be so sure.
If I recall correctly Kojima wanted to work on something else, the next game was going to be a spin-off with Raiden, this spin-off was set before the events of MGS4, Kojima doesn't want to direct the game, without his guidance, the team does not have a head or direction, the team also does not have experience with that type of game, the project stalls, Konami decides to continue the game but now under the direction of Platinum Games.

Even if they'd preserved the game design it would have been too much work. I don't think Delta looks bad, but it's not hard to imagine MGS3 with UE5-ified graphics, and even by that standard Delta isn't exactly impressive.

The best time to have remade the MSX gamsx was 20 years ago as a GBA/DS/PSP game or something as a smaller budget project.

in terms of gameplay and stealth, verticality.

it would be interesting if they can actually implement the Gekkos for a full game instead of small segments of Act 1,2,4 and 5.

the Gekkos were a very neat but underimplemented. if you play the opening part of Act 1 with the Gekkos and waited until they killed everyone, it is hard hiding from them, it was very interesting to hide from an enemy that can outrun you. it can be an interesting game built around that

also it would be interesting to try again Kojima's idea of sneaking through active battlefield and can join any faction fighting on the battlefield (scrapped to fighting only for the militia in MGS4)

PS3 (HDC)
>Metal Gear 2
PS2 (Subsistence Disc 2)
PS3 (HDC)
>Metal Gear Solid
PSX (2 Disc Title, $30~)

PS3 (Legacy Collection)

>Metal Gear Solid 2
PS2 (Substance for complete version)

PS3 (HDC)

None with vision is going to risk their career over it, and even less with Konami considering how they treated Kojima.

Well duh. They weren't doing the most faithful remake in history for shits and giggles, they were getting their sea legs by following a template very carefully. About the last thing I expect from them next time around is Metal Gear Solid 6. Per the Resi remakes (if nothing else), there's obviously a big giant audience that is interested in seeing fresh takes on classic games, especially a big portion of the audience who is (for whatever reason) intimidated out of playing games that are actually old. Which is especially funny to me in the context of MGS3, because surely, there are millions of people who are like "finally I can get into this series now" and will be doing so with a game that is nearly EXACTLY the same as its 20 year old counterpart, sans a very small suite of QOL changes. One thing I am wondering about Delta--I saw that there's a codec menu that can be brought up in-game now. Does that codec calls can happen while playing? Because I love that as an idea. I want to experience all of the codec silliness but I don't have the patience anymore to completely freeze the experience to do it still, for the most part.

As for what's next: Master Collection Vol 2 in 2026 or maybe early 2027. The port work on MGS4 is likely already going on but it's not going to be nearly as easy as clumsily shitting out the HD ports of the previous entries that already existed, and a poorly emulated version of MGS1. I think the next "new" entry though will most likely be MGS1, because I think the team will still be too green around the gills to do MG or MG2. And modernizing Metal Gear Solid 1 should be done thoughtfully this time, which will mean altering some aspects about how the game works, and hopefully with more tact and common sense applied than in Twin Snakes. It'll certainly be more of a production though--unless they're using the Peter Jackson AI tools they won't be able to salvage that legacy VO, and using the Twin Snakes re-recordings would be a bad mistake.

After this Guy Savage news, we have never been closer to a new Metal Gear Rising. Delta is probably gonna sell well, Revengeance is a cult classic and everyone loves it, people are getting critical Souls slop fatigue and there seems to be a resurgence of classic hack n' slash action (ninja gaiden 4) so there's an appetite for it. You can set the game 10-15 years after Revengeance as the Metal Gear future seems to be endless PMC conflict, have a new team of psychos for Raiden to brutalize, there is not really a need for major improvements in combat mechanics, just add variety and weapons. Bring back all the Maverick folks. Boris, Doktor, Kevin, Courtney + Blade Wolf and adult hot Sunny. Just call the same director and writer of the first game and hope wokism shit doesn't interfere in any way, shape or form and we're golden. You can even get flashback missions where Raiden remembers when he turned into a cyborg and rescued Sunny so you make everyone happy.
Metal Gear 0 (Cobra Unit/WW2) is a concept that only Kojima could and should handle to make it right and the guy's just not coming back, so hopefully they don't bother with that shit.

Peace Walker is the only post-Solid game that has a lot to gain from a fancy fresh new take. Its handheld roots show through in some really ugly ways.

Funny to think back about how people were (And still are) so miffed about what V ended up being. Maybe people wouldn't cop to it now but most people did not realize that Portable Ops and Peace Walker so clearly marked the direction the series would culminate in.

The idea of re-releasing V and GZ though seems silly--that's still a modern game, even though it's 10 years old. I'd even be curious to see a port of that mobile phone game, not the iOS shooting gallery for 4 but the other one. Don't expect it though, just like I don't expect to see Ghost Babel again. For all of the sensible directions for them to go in, I wonder when the first surprise will be. I don't think any of that is very interesting. Like what is there to say about Outer Heaven that wouldn't just be a retread of PW or MGSV, what is there to say about Gray Fox or Fox Hound even? Child soldiers is the only slightly compelling idea I guess but I don't know what you want out of that. I always saw his lapse in morality as a slow, natural process of decades of constant war. Like what would a story about that be and would it even be as good as what Metal Gear 2 says just on it's own, what would be the point.

I agree that attempt at trying to explain Outer Heaven was ruined by PW/TPP by dipping their toes in a similar concept but refusing to use Outer Heaven's name, it's still a hole in the plot and I hope there's a different approach to explaining this without being another "we have a big base on the sea and it's part of the gameplay!"
Gray Fox is definitely important explaining for BB's reasoning for accepting child soldiers, and Fox Hound is needed to explain why BB is using it to do a long term reverse-glowie tactic on US government, which is highly uncharacteristic for him as he's been nothing but a "leave me alone" guy instead of being scheme-y

If anything it would be a step above PW and MGSV since what Big Boss starts to do no longer involves crawling around in a cardboard box. He stole all of the world's nukes, a chunk from Russia, conned CIA into letting him run an operation to capture himself.

Like say, it could be told from Solid Snake's POV and describe his early rookie years, and then culminate with an actual MG1 ending mission since let's be real remaking MG1 as-is would be stupid, but using them as inspiration to soft-retcon some things in a more dynamic game wouldn't be bad.

The fact that both Konami and Kojima aren't refusing to speak of each other anymore is suspicious.
Konami greenlit the sentiment "We'd love to work with Kojima-san again."
Kojima played coy with a scripted question in the last HideoTube video where he pretended to be caught off guard when he was asked if Physint was Metal Gear.

I think there's a pretty good chance Physint is a Metal Gear project, so Kojima can leave the series on good terms and make better use of Liquid like he always regretted not being able to, and Konami can finally reclaim some face from how poorly the split went in the first place, now that it turns out the strategy they tried to force on Kojima wasn't the right play.

I feel like right there you explained why he did Fox hound, to do reverse glowie tactics. We also already saw him become scheme-y in MGSV with the whole Venom Snake thing. I feel like he got tired of being played by Cipher and decided to start playing others. An he gave an insane reasoning for child soldiers in MG2 already, not sure how much you can add to that, showing him going increasingly crazy on screen I guess. That would probably have more emotional weight than a text box on an MSX game admittedly.
I feel like in an alternate timeline where PW and V, and even Portable Ops, don't exist there is a lot of room for a great game that gives the entire villainous decline of Big Boss through the 70s and 80s. But after those two filled up the timeline and shit it's hard for me to imagine what they can cram in there without it feeling superfluous or repetitive.

No they wouldn't. They tried to invest heavily in the gambling and mobile games divisions and would have put the Digital Entertainment business on permanent mobileslop/live service duty. Which Kojima wasn't happy with, and for good reason.
Those didn't pan out. The gambling didn't work out because Covid helped the boomers it didn't kill cure or moderate their pachislot addictions, The mobile stuff didn't work out because Konami were fucking late to it. And the Live Service strategy also didn't work out because their first foray into it was a tasteless asset flip of MGSV right after they were getting flack for the split in the first place.

IIRC, Fukushima also wrote the Ac!d games, and no one praises those as the highest level of writing in the series, despite being "Pure Fukushima without any Kojima influence pulling it down."

And, he only ever wrote the incidental Codec calls in 2 and 3 anyway. The ones you'd get if you made calls outside of major story events. That's it. He did the busywork. It wasn't bad by any means in either of those games, but everything that's beloved about MGS2 and 3 absolutely came from Kojima's own brain. That's just the truth, even if you think he's gotten too avant garde and pretentious for his own good ever since.

Metal Gear Solid without Kojima has the same chances of being a successful and well made game if it had Kojima on board. Because after Death Stranding like 90% of /v/ figured out he was hack with no bearing on making the past games great and he was carried by people in Konami's actual studio. I don't think he poached everyone into Kojima productions completely anyway. Otherwise Death Stranding may not have turned out as shit as it was. Unlikely the gameplay and general design direction on the other hand. MGS4 is the key example of where Kojima was power tripping over every other department in the studio. I was never involved with the conversation to shift the goal posts, nor was I ever questioning what he originally wrote. My claim that Kojima doesn't know how to design fun games without someone there from stopping him from screwing it all up. Even that anon admitted that Kojima didn't even like the tactical espionage action games he was forced into associating his name with and he just had to make 4 against his own wishes. And there was a similar story in what happened during the production of V. Why I want Konami to continue Metal Gear Solid is that I don't think it will lack anything good in gameplay if Kojima is not present. The problem with making new Metal Gear games is this, not only is Snake dead but remember what Meryl said in MGS4? The era of espionage is over. The technology has become so advanced in Metal Gear that agents for stealth missions like Snake are obsolete. Even if the technology of the Patriots was destroyed from what we can see in Metal Gear Rising humans continued personally advancing the tech the ais founded so stealth missions and such are irrelevant.

You really can't make new Metal Gear games in the timeline as its.....contrived. Unless you do a wholly new game in a new timeline or else world you really can't continue making much. And it doesn't help that again Snake is dead. And even if he was alive he literally put down the gun to live as a normal human in his final year of life. Snake is not going to waste his "senior" years fighting terrorists.

Metal Gear can't get new games except remakes like Delta. And another thing it doesn't look like the staff at Konami WANT to make Metal Gear games. They want to make different games altogether.

Simple, make a game and ensure the gameplay is good and the story is simply entertaining for what it is. Look at other franchises that flourished without their creators working on them anymore like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The most famous Batman stories were NOT written by Mr. Finger and Mr. Kane. That's a good point, Gray Fox was effectively legally dead but advanced tech injected the spark of life back in his corpse. Sure he was a cyborg afterward but the tech to make Liquid continue to exist was there.

I think that Liquid never returned because Kojima never imagined Liquid had much potential. He was some jealous guy who wanted to kill his brother and that's it. Trying to make Outer Heaven hardly counts as a unique goal since Solidus and Ocelot also attempted it. Liquid simply never had much substance as a character.

Metal Gear villains only show up to be main villains in one game only and its one of the series best elements because it shows how one and done human life is. You seriously can't expect a villain in this series to be like Joker from Batman who death can never stop. And it gets ridiculous and annoying.

To be fair, Kojima thinks MGS4 is melodramatic fluff at this point too. The entire final act of Death Stranding 2 is the most fucking tongue in cheek satire of MGS4's ending possible. The whole game is, really. Kojima's more self aware than you think. That's why DS2 is comically melodramatic and literally revolves around a dead baby while also being so heavy handed with those themes that no one could actually take it seriously. You literally have Guillermo Del Toro playing with baby toys to explain the plot one minute, then it's revealed he's been dead the whole time. Then his ghost ends up controlling Not-Gray Fox and you have an electric guitar laser battle against metrosexual Troy Baker, then recreate the microwave hallway scene.

It's not the same Platinum at all. That said, the fact that they went out of their way and got Platinum specifically to make the Guy Savage remake instead of just replacing it with a cutscene or leaving it out entirely, plus the Granin Rising Secret Theater joke both make me think they're priming the audience for MGR2, or at least a Platinum developed Castlevania game or something.

There's no missing link, the Big Boss at the end of Peace Walker already is just like the one in MG1.
MGSV just hammered this down by showcasing Big Boss having no problems using one of his soldiers the same way the US used him.

It's going to be the sequel trilogy all over again.
Only game I'd accept is a direct sequel to MGSV that uses V as a base and expands it with more refined gameplay, more weapons, a pilotable Metal Gear and a huge variety of environments.

MGS 1, 2 and 3 were all fucking incredible games in their day. MGS1 feels better to control than 99% of PS1 games, MGS2 was a gigantic fucking leap from 1, with one of the most Kino stories in all of video games, that also happened to be extremely prescient. And MGS3 is just a really good spy thriller with insane avant garde elements.

If Physint is Metal Gear, I expect it to be a sort of Metal Gear Liquid, even if they don't call it that. Kojima's said outright that his one regret with the whole series was not using Liquid to better effect and killing him off the first time he appeared. Then teasing his presence for the entire rest of the series without actually fleshing him out, because he was either a petulant child who says almost nothing in the whole game, or dead the whole time.

I don't know if it's because I played the first three in... well, reverse order, but I always found 2 to be the least impressive gameplay-wise. It doesn't have the depth of 3 yet isn't as snappy and arcade-y in good way as 1. To me, 2 was always the inbetweener. Which is unfortunate because it's arguably the most 'important' game in the entire series, and an actual good effort to do something with the medium that cannot be done with others.

Yeah, you ruined your enjoyment a little by playing them backwards. 3 is 2, but strictly better in terms of gameplay and level design, and 2 is 1 with prettier graphics and a million little nuances and gimmicks. Literally. It's Raiden intentionally being put through a parallel experience to 1 that's been choreographed from the start. Just so the Patriots could have a pretty boy to wave around as an Ubermensch National Hero.

I've owned the same Fat Model PS3 since I was a kid. You can't expect the cheapest one on eBay to actually be good. That's always some dickhead selling his crapped out neglected piece of shit way under asking price just to get it off his hands.

MGS2 is pretty different. It's much faster than MGS3 and more stealth-focused than MGS1. Even in terms of sneaking alone it's more claustrophobic than MGS1 or the MSX games. That's the appeal of it. MGS3 is a sluggish cakewalk in comparison.

It has its issues (crawling may as well not even exist; it's too easy to headshot your way through; the bosses aren't my favorites) but there's nothing really like MGS2.
