Nigger there's one and two handed builds to start with, then fast shot and aimed shot builds, builds that go into energy weapons, melee, unarmed, small guns, big guns.
THere's at least eight builds that can breeze through the game, and fuckloads more that'll let you win with more difficulty.

In theory you could put everything into Traps, Gambling, and Outdoorsman to role play as some kind of hunter-gatherer with a gambling problem but I can't imagine someone playing Fallout 1 and not putting skill points into at least one combat skill. Even then, you can still beat the game if you know what you're doing, it'll just be very hard. But that would be true of never leveling a combat skill in even modern RPGs. Imagine playing Cyberpunk and never getting augments or only fighting bare-handed

I played it for the first time in 2018. I liked it. I went on to play and complete Fallout 2 but I had to rush the ending because I was getting a looping crash error at the shuttle area. Fallout 2's tutorial is boring and too handhold-y and I like being set free in the world to learn my own way asap. I didn't use guides and tried to focus on a combat skill and a few tertiary skills. I tried not to spread my stats out too much.

Fallout 1 and 2 are the entry-level games you force yourself to play when you want to become serious about games and play the "hardcore RPG for real gamers". In reality they are just not very good games nor do they have deep mechanics, they're just kinda bad but don't tell that to Reddit.
