Maria is insane and can't let James go so she can't get redemption. She's a sad creature that didn't ask to exist, so you have to put her out of her misery since she can't and wont' change her obsession with James.
Eddie is intentionally driven mad by the town and goes psychotic. Angela is driven to mopey suicide and was always suicidal when she started.
James has the choice of forging one path or another.

That's why I prefer Stillness. James is never forgiven for his crime and has to live the rest of his life with that burden until he dies or puts a bullet through his head.
