I loved it, but I'm not a typical Godzilla fan. It was a dry, humorous story about Japanese politicians determinedly marching from room to room to ask what the fuck they're supposed to do about this giant nuke lizard. Meanwhile everybody in a position of power goes
>Uh... I dunno.... Ask somebody else
All the while Japan crumbles all around them. It'a funny as fuck because there's always this tense music playing while the footage is just overhead shots of a bunch of tired office employees march with deadpan faces to the next middle manager's office trying to get going a plan of action. Cue Godzilla fucking shit up.

For reference I also watched Minus One and thought it was hokey, melodramatic crap. So take that as you will. As someone who just likes good movies and doesn't care for Godzilla all that much, I think Shin is a legitimately good movie, and Minus One in the same league of Marvel movies.

Lol no. It's like 90% of a "political commentary" where the comment is a pedestrian-tier "The government is kinda slow and inefficient." Of the 10% with Godzilla, it's literally just an Eva angel in terms of edgy death-weapon where it's just ass-pulling new abilities to rape humans with. Even then, I genuinely don't think I would like it if it hadn't been Godzilla.

Either way, Godzilla Minus One is INFINITELY the better movie without fail.

I wouldn't even call it uncanny. This genuinely looks really retarded. And okay, sure, not even half the movie. But even when he is fully evolved and stops looking like a chubby chungus-wungus derp monster-pal that I might see on a tumbler, his final stage looks like someone made a creepy-pasta of the original Godzilla design, with a really awful wiggling tail. Unique? Maybe. Dumb as fuck? I think so.

I've seen all of them up to around the third legendary film (I think I've seen all the others too, but my memory gets kinda fuzzy around all the newer stuff and I think I might have missed one of the vs. Kong ones). I thought Minus One was great overall and the ending scene is a fantastic example of less is more when it comes to acting. It's not enough to spoil the movie for me but my issue is more to do with certain side characters that drift a bit too far into pantomime territory for my liking. The MC should have shown up after godzilla wrecked the place and presumably killed her (but it's never actually shown)
then her showing up at the end wouldn't feel so asspulled and the drama of him showing up to the scene but only after it's all over and not being able to find her would be far more biting and less contrived melodrama as it is in the movie where he happens to get there just as Godzilla is rampaging after she just happened to survive being crushed and then just happened to push him to safety instead of diving into him which would both save herself and also save him more effectively by having more force to push them to safety and you literally see her get yeeted and mc reeees about it
it's just too contrived when a parallel audience and mc know the same thing (nothing) would be more poignant and make the reveal at the end feel like a genuine relief instead of a generic asspull

Shin Ultraman is good but it's played completely straight. There's no real twists or subversions and it's hardly darker than the original, unlike the other two toku Shin movies.

But that was also about Japanese government fuck ups. It's almost like the Godzilla series has this theme of Godzilla being a karmic punishment for poor leadership.

>Minus One kinda filled its spot.
Hard disagree. Minus One is better than every movie that came out around the same time, but that bar is so fucking low you'd have to tunnel to get underneath it. Minus One isn't actually very good as a standalone film, let alone a Godzilla film. Shin was innovative, nuanced, unique, and absolutely earned a spot among the top 3 Godzilla, not to mention completely blew 2014 out of the water by being everything it should have been.
Minus One is representative absolutely everything wrong with the Japanese film industry, and is derivative, sterile, safe, cliche, and grossly formulaic. The one thing I can give it over Shin is the soundtrack.
