FF12 came out in 2006, when I was graduating high school. It was the last Final Fantasy "main series" game I played.
I never experienced FFXIII, FFXIII-2, FFXIII-3, FFXIV Online, FFXV or FFXVI. But, I hear they're not worth the investment of purchasing the consoles. games, or the time invested necessary to meet the games' goals for its audience.

14-16 are all significantly better, 13 doesn't feel like an FF at all, just some overproduced chuuni porcelain trash that's loosely based on FF7

XVI was a bit above mid, which was still a huge improvement over XV and XIII. Strangers of Paradise and Rebirth were both fucking great though.

It was actually the first time it was completely gone. FF11, FF12 and the FF7 Compilation took out most of it while FF13 removed what little of it was left.

Hot take: every single FF game was good and special in their own way. While the quality does differ from game to game, they were all overall very good games that offered great worlds and characters and innovative gameplay.

I said the same when I was only a few hours into the game but nah, the game is kinda shit. The story SEEMED interesting in the first few hours but there's something lacking about the whole thing. I feel like the characters got their souls sucked out of them after the timeskip. Even before that I didn't care much about Cid.

I think it should have been a full action game like MGR, the boss fights are where the game shines.

13's battle system was okay but its streamlined linearity was too egregious to ignore. reaching grand pulse was too little too late.

15 was a straight up dumpster fire; it always felt salvaged and disjointed.

didn't finish 16 but still enjoyed it. thought i'd hate the ff7 remakes but they're good; a step in the right direction.

i legitimately cannot think of a single good character in xvi. the main character the whole story is built around is just an agreeable nice guy, and somehow everyone around him is even more agreeable and passive, so you forget about them quickly. ig the villains are more abrasive, but they mostly exist to power up clive so its a huge nothingburger. jesus the best villain in xvi is just a pawn for ultima whose sole personality is sucking off alien hitler, that just goes to show how dire xvi's cast is

Dion failing to stop the forces that were destroying the empire and accompanying Clive to the final battle to atone for it was great
Kupka was a great mid-game antagonist for Clive to have to deal with, and Clive getting to brag about killing Benedikta to him was a great moment.


The cast is fun, and enjoyed my time with them. That's more than I can say for any FF since X.

13-2 actually. The combat system was fully realized.

I platinumed both FFXIII and FFXVI (no DLC lol). FFXIII's platinum was fucking abysmal because of all the trap farming you have to do at the end but I fucking DESPISED FFXVI for making me go through the entire game on "hard" mode when 1. it should be unlocked from the start and all the exclusive "hard" mode exclusive equipment should just be NG+ regardless of difficulty 2. all "hard" mode fucking does is make enemies damage sponges. I don't like either game that much but I dislike FFXIII less.

It's ok, the entire trilogy is just ok, nothing special but not bad like how many people claim

My memories of XIII are faint at this point and perhaps it was because I was a retarded teen, but at least I didn't have to force myself to keep going with XIII. The only FF to have that honor was II for me. No matter how bad modern FF is and how much potential II has (that probably gets put to use in remakes), II might be the worst (long) game I've ever beat, it was memorable in that way.

Context of its release matters. 10-2 and 12 already received mixed response after what many considered a long lasting streak of great games. The 13 trailers generated tons of hype, first next gen FF, talked about as a return to 7 style game. It looked insane visually for the time, to the point it holds up pretty well to this day. Those expectations were huge and not met. 13’s opening hours drag on far too much so left a bad impression. Many probably never even finished it.
