it was always kind of a niche genre and for whatever reason people stopped focusing on making great campaigns. Dawn of war is a great series but it's ultimately dragged down by lack of any story. The battle map campaign is very cool but it's still missing the magic you get from aoe2 or wc3

RTS died because game development became a parody of itself. Playing C&C red alert 2, I imagined future FPS games would be grander in scale and combine elements from other genres as tech improved. That never happened. That never happened with a single genre. Games just got gayer and more retarded with every generation. This trend of gay retardification began well before any of the clownworld quantum gay retard shit in recent memory. Which wouldn't have been possible for them to do if video games weren't already in a gay retard downspiral as early as 2007.

RTS simply was not a robust enough genre to weather Gay Retard Ragnarok. Critical releases that could have saved it were all cancelled in favor of making slop safe for gay retards.

Genre schism. There are countless other genres and subgenres that let you focus on specific aspects of RTS that you prefer, so people end up in those.
Even smaller focus, even on a single unit? MOBA
Prefer building? Colony sims, Sim City clones
Focus on smaller unit groups? Real time tactics
Defending bases? Tower defence
Slower pace with decision focus? Tons of turn based options (xcom style tactics games, grand strategy, 4x)
Even something like Minecraft could be argued to allow someone to fulfill certain things that someone may have enjoyed about old RTS

RTS is a pretty specific niche given the wide array of options you have now

Competitive games that require an extraordinary amount of dedication to develop a skill have fallen by the wayside in popularity.
Why do you think Fighting Games fell of with the greater public? The average retarded have started to realize what it takes to become a good player.

It's the equivalent of playing StarCraft or Street Fighter 2 because it was popular and the difference of sticking with it through years and years to increase your APM and decision making or dissecting the patterns of your adversary through exhausting analysis.
It's the path of least resistance.
Playing as a hobby or social bounding exercise is what most people do. Same for watching, which also breeds the unsurmountable number of "experts". It's easier to criticize than do it.
And it isn't just the will to do it. The support system and the tenacity to still do it when there isn't such support, is a very rare situation.
